Do you think that gay men have worse body image issues than women? Why do you think so?

Basically society often discusses how women have body image issues. Gay men are said to have a worse obsession.

So you're saying gay men are essentially women with penises?

I do think in recent years, the gender gap is closing super quickly as men continue to be objectified in the media alongside women. But I still think women experience the greater brunt of body image issues.

Consider also the fact that eating disorders are not widely discussed regarding men. Masculinity/Machismo is the biggest factor I think. It's unmanly to express dissatisfaction about your body, it's unmanly to limit food portions or eat healthy. I'm not saying that is how it should ideally be, but that is the current prevailing belief. Bigorexia (a.k.a. muscular dysmorphia), which prevails more among men, also does not put lives in such danger like anorexia/self-starvation or bulimia/purging do. So I think it also gets less attention because of that.

I think that a quite a few gay men rank high on the narcissism scale which goes in hand with maintaining their unattainable body image

I just did a google search for it (unsurprising result icon_neutral.gif) https://www.google.com/search?q=gays+narcissism

Do we have body image issues greater than our hetero counterparts?

    https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/eating-disorders-lgbt-populations

https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/eating-disorders-lgbt-populationsIn one study, gay and bisexual boys reported being significantly more likely to have fasted, vomited or taken laxatives or diet pills to control their weight in the last 30 days. Gay males were 7 times more likely to report binging and 12 times more likely to report purging than heterosexual males.

Compared to other populations, gay men are disproportionately found to have body image disturbances and eating disorder behavior (STATS). Gay men are thought to only represent 5% of the total male population but among men who have eating disorders, 42% identify as gay.

http://www.slate.com/blogs/outward/2014/01/23/gay_men_and_plastic_surgery_why_so_much.htmlIn 2012, a British poll found that 48 percent of gay men surveyed would sacrifice a year of their life to enjoy their ideal body now, and another 10 percent would give up 11 years, killing themselves to be beautiful.

    http://www.ibtimes.com/steroid-use-6-times-higher-among-gay-male-teens-straight-teens-study-finds-1552966

The study, published Monday in the journal Pediatrics, found that about 4 percent of heterosexual male teens reported using muscle-building steroids at some point in their lives. Less than 1 percent of straight male adolescents said they used steroids more than 40 times.

The rates of steroids use among gay male teens, however, were much higher. According to the report, 21 percent of gay adolescents said they had used steroids, and 4 percent of them admitted to using them more than 40 times.

I would say the answer is yes. And if you want to know the answer why -- just take a look at what we uphold as our ideal "look" and what we are "expected" to look like. And not just in our teens and 20's. The pressure is on just as strong in our 50's and even 60's to live up to the ideal Tom of Finland/DNA/whatever our niche is ripped, cut, muscled look. And as the British poll showed, a significant number of us are willing to sacrifice years off of our lives to do it.

I think body issues will happen all over the board, straight men and woman as well as gay men and women. For gay men, I'm saying this loosely, but from what I have observed....we care what we look like, which is fine. I think some may obsess more than others but you may have a straight man who obsesses just as much. Gay men want to look good for other gay men...simple as that.

Yeah during sleepovers we braid each other's hair and make creampies.

I think it all depends on the guy. I think some of us have healthy images, but realistic. Some just don't or are seeking something that is (for all practical purposes) a figment of their imaginations. I think is someone is looking to improve their bodies, you have to get input from medical professionals and trainers in terms of developing some realistic goals that are attainable.

You cant see the correlation, really??
    Ok, Ill be your teacher:

    - Gay men (bottoms) get fucked, just like women they recieve the dick. They lay there as the top breeds them. They're pasive just like women.

    - gay men ussually like stuff that appeals only to girls such as clothes, fashion, haircuts, beyonce or maddona. Not into normal sports but soft sports that are played individually (like women).

    - Many gays have mannerisms and speak with a lisp, sometimes you think theyre girls while speaking on the phone.

    - in order to attract males gays go through everything to have a good body (or whatever they concider hot). only gays and women do that, straight guys let themselves go.

Corelation between women and gays is clear and everyone knows it except some gay people in denial.

Hope you finally learned because you have a test tomorrow.

I'm really surprised, Franco is amazingly out of shape. If he was gay he would be in way better shape because he would have narcissistic body image issues.

Haven't seen anyone refer to NoFLFitGuy's statistics yet. That is some pretty damning and sweeping evidence that jives with the OP's initial thoughts.

hmm.. well gay men would be comparing themselves to other men to determine their body's worth(?) where as a woman would be comparing it to other women. This assuming both are trying to attract men and that intellect, status and personality are void. I think the woman would have more issues with her own appearance though the thought pattern could effect a man just as severely. A modern woman has makeup, clothes, special shoes and hairstyles that attribute to her attractiveness as well as her genetically inherited traits such as leg length, breast size, waist size(ok that one is lifestyle impacted as well) and facial features. Men have their faces and bodies too they just don't have to goop themselves up and highlight these things in order to be deemed attractive by society. I guess body builders would be a good counter argument as some use fake tan to show definition in their competitions. If gay men are comparing themselves to said athletes, they are going to have issues as it takes years of hard work and applied knowledge to achieve those results, women are kinda stuck in the body they have, can't train their legs longer for instance. So for a man their is always hope of becoming his better self, a woman might despair because it's just going to get saggy anyway. I'm making huge generalizations on what attractiveness is and speculating to no end here, but that's my opinion.
