    article:
The state's sex education program mandates that "classes must emphasize, in a factual manner and from a public health perspective, that homosexuality is not a lifestyle acceptable to the general public and that homosexual conduct is a criminal offense under the laws of the state."

It reads the fuck like Russia. But we only protest vodka...

I think the list is a bit misleading because it looks at the lows rather than the medians. Unlike Mississippi or North Dakota (which Michigan allegedly just edged out for #5 worst), Michigan does have a thriving gay community (at least in the southeastern part of the state).

The lack of legal protections is a problem, but this is also a national problem (sure, some states are better). If ENDA passed or gay marriage were guaranteed at a Federal level, Michigan would be as good as most of the rest of the states (even if not a Mecca).

Progress, overall, has been slow. But we all have a role to play in this and ultimately... it gets better. We will win.

Makes you feel a little sick that people can be so entrenched in a narrow mindset that they'd be willing to beat another human being's face in just for having a different way of life. Too bad prejudice is such a hard thing to tear out of a society...although it's definitely encouraging to see how much things have changed even over the last 10 years.
