Seriously, I prefer to hear "Merry Christmas", a sentimental reminder of my youth. But I'll often say "Happy Holidays" because so many of my friends, and many strangers I encounter in South Florida, are Jewish.

Not that any of them ever complain that they're offended at Merry Christmas, and they'll say it back to me. Most I know put up a Christmas tree in their homes themselves, along with a tabletop Menorah. They view Christmas more as a secular holiday these days, that everyone can enjoy for the decorating, gift-giving & parties. And it can certainly be merry.

Still, I think it's a mark of courtesy for them that I say Happy Holidays instead. Especially since it can be meant to include their own Hanukkah, which is very close to Christmas this year (Dec 17-24). To me it's not political correctness, but rather a matter of politeness, respect & good manners.

Just like when our Jewish friends say Merry Christmas to me. Oh, and I also say Happy Hanukkah to them, often in reply to Merry Christmas. I don't see why consideration for others is denigrated as liberal PC by the Right, who prefer riding roughshod over everyone, and shoving their exclusive narrow-minded values down everyone else's throats.

I treat Christmas as a secular holiday, more or less. It's roots are in paganism, anyway. If I'm at a designated family Christmas Party, I'll say "Merry Christmas." Otherwise, I just use the catchall "Happy Holidays," because it just seems more inclusive and it covers the whole season of winter holidays, including New Years.

Im catholic so I prefer "merry christmas" but 40% of the population here are atheists/agnostic so the normal is to say "happy celebrations" (unless you specifically know christmas means more than food and presents for them)

I see nothing offensive with either "Merry Christmas" or with "Happy Holidays". Both are perfectly fine by me.

If I know you well enough to know your religious tradition, I'll say Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukkah or what ever is appropriate. If I don't know I say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays as most people in my circle and town are Christians.

On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day I say Merry Christmas no matter what your particular beliefs are for that are what those days are - Christmas.

Depends on the company you are keeping. If you are in mixed company best to say "Happy Holidays". Saying "Merry Christmas" just singles out people that celebrate that.

lol neither one, I don't get offended. Technically, I'm not a Christian, never been, so I just jumped on the bandwagon of buying gifts and seeing Xmas trees. Lol I think Happy Holiday is more inclusive and Merry Christmas is more specific. It's all good.

    Insincerity noted.

Curious though that someone might have taken as offense my correction to their presumption.

I simply wish for others that they should enjoy their holidays.

I wear a Christian Religious symbol so I'm offended when liberals force they're cop killing, abortionist and atheist views on me by wishing me happy holidays.

one might the individual is over thinking their bounds.

The reason it's offensive (not that I'm offended by people wishing me happiness) is that it whitewashes a minority that is different. Just as you might find it disagreeable (to some extent) for someone to say "Best wishes to your wife" and assume you are straight.

If the latter is heterosexist, then the former is Christiosexist.
Yup. I'm running with that. icon_lol.gif

    Or Christiocentric? Christiocratic?
