point of reference: perhaps a year or so ago. We had far more interesting participants than Terra22 and Jakebenson....guys like ShawnTX, zdrew (still here but not as active), and others who were/are far wittier than the dreck that seems to pass for threads now.

Perhaps you should start an uncrappy thread (this current one aside)

Hey, this place is great if you worship young attention whores or you're overcompensatorily masculine and angry.

Bring back from their faded ghosts fastprof, Obscenewish, Satyricon331, chewey_delt, zdrew, innerathlete (what happened to him?), DiverScience, can_duathlete, chemguy, gigadu... and a fair few others.

RJ is at its best when it's smart, rather than when it's loud. But online communities have to adapt to changing demographics, and the interest levels of their members. I think people might be kidding themselves in thinking there was a "golden age", as there are always villains and demons, diversions, etc.

The fitness advice though remains awesome.

I'm pretty new here and I'm enjoying many things about this site, but I can't say I'm thrilled with the two elements you describe so accurately.

The self-congratulatory posters aren't my favorites either.

Still, there seem to be a lot of smart and interesting (and sexy) men here.

RJ is real dull at the moment and it seems to be turning into a puerile offspring of MySpace. Why would anyone pay to be a supporter of this site?

The site has a much different flavor from when I first joined. As someone stated the demographics of the site have shifted and the forums represent that shift for better or worse.

The owners of that boxer should be severely punished. Imagine embarrassing a dog like that!

The forum topics are pretty predictable at times, and some of the more unique contributors have gone into hiding. One is in Armenia, another is in Texas, and I am not sure what happened to "Innerathlete". Maybe he is madly in love in LA!

RJ has always had it's share of pedantic and puerile posts* and miscellaneous ridiculosity mixed in with witty humor, and earnest contributions from genuinely cool guys. The mix has shifted though, as has the general tone of the forums - RJ is a much more combative community now. The lolcats were a symptom, not a cause, I think...their increased prevalence seems indicative of apathy from posters who used to make sublime points but now feel, perhaps, that their wit and thought are wasted here.

Speaking solely for myself, I find the vast majority of what is posted today to be uninteresting. Not bad or stupid per se, but just not of personal interest to me. Same goes for the posters...honestly, RJ once had a fairly healthy assortment of interesting characters, many of whom have gone silent or, as TigerTim noted, have faded off. I don't chip in much these days cuz (a) the guys I liked have moved on (and some of us continue our friendships in other e-venues) and (b) cuz a visit to RJ just leaves me cranky now more often than not.

zdrew has spoken a great deal of truth to Caslon's inquiry. I too have strayed a bit from RJ as I haven't found it to be as entertaining. I enjoyed the political flame wars, fitness questions, relationship ideals and yes...even the campy "would you [blankity blank blank] to/with/on the guy above you.......but they have seem to fade with the sunset. Hell, yesterday I was home from work because of MLK Day and even though I was logged onto RJ, there was nothing that struck my interest. Are we doomed? Have we seen a shift in the RJ community? Is there such a thing as 'over promotion?" Only time will tell!

RJ is full of suck right now. But these things come and go. A month from now we may all be happily typing over the corpses of "how awesome am I?" threads.

I think that this is really a symptom that every forum has. Every forum has ebbs and flows and, alas, as the site gets more popular a forum tends to have more ebbs than flows. The way I see it is that good forums are good because the site in question with the forum got lucky enough (or was interesting and well-designed enough, as the case for RJ--I think--and another site I post to) to attract a certain number of interesting posters who were willing to give the forum a shot. After a while, however, as the site increases in popularity there begins to be a critical mass of less-interesting posters that the forum regulars don't want to engage with, and so the regulars tend to drop off. This is especially true in a forum with very little moderation, that doesn't ensure that old forum topics are recreated ad nauseum.

While this is an elitist view of forums, I find it to be generally true.

    ---EDIT---

There's also the distinct possibility, of course, that forum regulars get stuck in a self-congratulatory lull in which they pat themselves on the back for being so great, and get annoyed when new meat comes along and does something different than they're used to. I think it's quite plausible that this has occurred with the RJ forum regulars. But, I still think it has more to do with my first explanation, and a general overload of fluff topics.
