In January, a series of placards will begin appearing inside subway cars and then buses and the commuter railroads in February. They will bear gentle, but firm reminders pointing out common courtesies that can make traveling by mass transit more enjoyable for everyone. The messages serve to remind the MTA’s 8.6 million daily customers that they can help make the trip quicker and more pleasant by demonstrating a personal, consistent commitment to courtesy.

MuchMoreThanMuscle saidThis bullshit behavior is what some 'alpha male' wannabes pull to try and assert their dominance in a given environment.

I take the bus and guys not only spread their legs wide but they purposely extend their legs across the aisle blocking a clear path which forces people to either walk around them or lift their legs to step over them. That is until I walk all over them. icon_idea.gif

^Just because a reminder sign goes up doesn't mean everyone knows how to read and follow the instructions icon_rolleyes.gif

some guys are just more comfortable sitting like that?

takes up no more space, i believe than if you sit with one leg propped up and angled over the other. :/

Snug male trousers can indeed cause some discomfort from confining pressure when seated with the legs together. But as the article states, it's not harmful to male health for short periods of time in public transportation.

When I'll be traveling some hours in a car or plane I wear the loosest pants I have and boxer shorts underneath. You can't drive a car with your legs spread too widely, nor do you have a vast amount of space on a plane, even in First Class. So I dress accordingly to give my boys an easier time.

Our last car trip to Key West, a little over 4 hours, I wore a kilt while driving. In traditional fashion, i.e. "commando". Much more comfortable than pants, I recommend it.

Of course I got a few raised eyebrows when stepping outside to fill the car at a gas station, and going to the restroom. But I'm too old, and rather headstrong, to worry what other people think about me in most cases. So long as it's not illegal or inconsiderate to others I do what I want, conventional or not.

Which is why I don't endorse "manspreading" and think a guy can find better ways to solve any intimate tightness problems he may be experiencing. I know public subways can be packed, but spreading your legs to "mark your territory" to the detriment of others is not being very sociable or accommodating.

Of course, if you're a real New Yorker you would sit down right next to the guy anyway, and shove his leg closed to make room. I'm glad they're posting signs to encourage people to in effect do just that.

    LOL!

BTW, you are from Manchester? A good friend of ours here has a British specialty food shop in Fort Lauderdale. He also hails from Manchester. His Mum had a shop in Manchester, too, maybe you would have known it. His shop here is where I get all my tea, and other British goodies.

Is manspreading exclusive to legs? What about arms?

I'm a tall guy with long legs and arms. I need more room, but I always make do with the little I get. I'm ok with that, but when I go to lunch and a 5'9" sits next to me with his elbows wide open taking up my equal share of the space I get furious.

I can go on a rant about manspreader's on the subway here in NYC, especially if it's during rush hour with millions of riders sharing a tight space.

I'm 6,5" never tempted to do it even though I always seem to attract overweight riders trying to wedge themselves into a seat next to me.... It's less about a "medical necessity" and more about being knowingly inconsiderate since they're taking up 3 seats. I've seen guys use this as a tactic to get people not to sit next them so they can have more "space." Can't wait for etiquette ads to get rolled out.

Long time subway rider recognize this dickish behavior and will tell them to close their leg so they can sit down. I saw an old lady nearly sit on the knee of one guy taking up the last available seat on the train.

At the gym manspreading is fine though.

This quote from a manspreader makes me want to face palm btw: “I’m not going to cross my legs like ladies do,” Fabio Panceiro told the New York Times last week, “I’m going to sit how I want to sit.” icon_rolleyes.gif
