They're within their legal right to refuse to marry all couples, however they've already admitted their decision is based on bias and discrimination. I smell a nasty lawsuit in the wind. And they deserve it.

I presume then that Jacksonville will also be shutting down the revenue stream it gets from renting its public facilities for private use...

    http://jpl.coj.net/ConferenceCenter/main.html
Lovett Courtyard – (Second Floor) – Approximately 10,000 square feet of outdoor space combined with an indoor atrium area ideal for cocktail receptions, weddings and gala events for up to 250 guests. (Restrictions during operating hours.)

f.Atrium – Open space on the third floor within the Main Library can be used on its own or in conjunction with the Courtyard for wedding ceremonies and receptions. (Restrictions during operating hours.)

...because that would then also run counter their supposed conscience to issue such permits and take gay rental moneys.

Or is the implication here that they think their county clerks are really emissaries of some homophobic God refusing to convey their municipal blessings instead of simply stamping notarization to some forms?

    Fuck Jacksonville.

I found it interesting that bitch Bondi went to SC Justice Thomas, when Thomas has not ruled or dissented in the 2013 SCOTUS DOMA ruling. I guess picking conservative Thomas didn't help Bondi one bit as he denied her an extension.
    Jacksonville? Doesn't surprise me

Very interesting scenario, so far, no other state, other than FLA, has argued over county by county legalized gay marriage. We have not seen this in other state rulings. I find it juvenile that the state attorney would try to divide its own state to accommodate conservative county's, its laughable but predictable for how republicans operate. By not issuing marriage license to either hetero or homo, they are in fact saving their own jobs, (failure to perform oath of office) and that is what they actually voted on, as a group.
"If we stick together, they cant fire all of us" type mentality, this could backfire on them with a class action lawsuit icon_rolleyes.gif

Does this apply to issuing license or the ceremony? or both

That's not how it works. She didn't pick Thomas; each Supreme Court justice has jurisdiction for this purpose over one or more of the 11 circuits. This one is his. That's all there was to it.

At church this morning at Holy Cross MCC in Pensacola (Escambia county) they announced they'll be performing weddings starting Tuesday morning. This afternoon I heard they were full for Tuesday and booking weddings for Wednesday.

No doubt the nutjobs from Pensacola Christian College will be out to protest at the church or the judicial building ... OR BOTH... Students from there are infamous for inflicting their insanity on residents and tourists alike.

As for the four Florida counties joining Duval (Jacksonville) to stop issuing all marriage licenses neighboring Baker and Clay counties are no surprise.

Santa Rosa county (including suburbs of Pensacola) is no surprise since it's dominated by refugees from Escambia county who commute to Pensacola.

Okaloosa county (Ft Walton/Destin/Eglin AFB/Hurlburt Field AFB and half of the island known as Pensacola Beach) is a surprise that will backfire in a hurry. It's no doubt a decision made strictly in the county seat of of Crestview (population 20,000) without any consideration for the residents of Ft. Walton, Destin, Navarre who produce over 70% of the county tax revenues. There are several very wealthy gay business owners in that area who will have their say before the issue is over.

Depending on how things stack up between now and May in the last states holding out against marriage equality, Pensacola will be a lively town Memorial Day with people flocking to the annual gay beach weekend with intentions of getting married while they're here.

We are witnessing the last futile efforts against marriage equality.

Oh, OK, thanks for that clarification, Clarence Thomas was just finally dragged into fray, kicking and screaming, he must have known that one day he would have to speak up on the issue. Lets not forget, Florida, home of Thurgood Marshall, The Hanging Chad, Gore v Bush, David Boies and Ted Olson who would of course go on to defeat CA prop 8, we have come full circle in Florida icon_lol.gif

She looks like some bitchy Human Resource manager I had once, (young white ladies wearing pearls SCREAM, I am a republican) she is very "white", compared to her constituents and voter precincts in the southern part of Florida, she could always fit in at Faux News channel as a breast exposing flu-zzy doing commentary icon_rolleyes.gif

This is what happens when you elect Republicans.
They ignore society's real problems and spend their time and money attacking minorities they hate. This time it's gay people, but they also hate blacks and Latinos just as much.
Please register and vote Republicans out of office.

Dereliction of elected duty, most people in the private sector would be FIRED for refusing to do their job they were hired to do. Appears the north and pan handle parts of Florida have decided not to cooperate. icon_rolleyes.gif

More Than a Dozen Florida Counties Just Got Out Of The Wedding Business
    http://www.thenewcivilrightsmovement.com/davidbadash/more_than_a_dozen_florida_counties_just_got_out_of_the_wedding_business

The Times on Friday confirmed that no couples will be married by county officiants in these counties: Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Holmes, Washington, Bay, Jackson, Calhoun, Liberty, Franklin, Wakulla, Baker, Clay, Duval and Pasco.

It's unclear – and may vary by county – if the head clerk of each county has the legal right to determine if clerks or duly-appointed court employees may pick and choose which duties they will and will not perform.

It's ironic that one of the counties denying marriage equality is Liberty County. Maybe change that to "Limited Liberty" or "Selective Liberty"?

Home of Jacksonville Naval Air Station and named after the famous gay strip in Key West, Duval St. Or was that the county name was first before the street name. icon_idea.gif

Here's the view of the Bourbon St. Pub seen from Duval St. when they aren't dropping drag queen "Sushi". For the midnight drop the center part of the balcony railing is opened and the purple canopy below is removed. The New Orleans House gay hotel is upstairs.

    P1020154_zps031c73ad.jpg

This is the hotel balcony from which Sushi is lowered. Our regular suite is at the far end. You can see the shoe parked there.

And here's my husband sitting in the shoe, outside our suite.

    P1010172_zps7d1c026b.jpg

We don't go down for New Year's, too much craziness. Nor for most of the scheduled annual events, although we do visit KW at least 4 times a year. We go there to relax, not to party.

According to my morning news in Gainesville only Alachua Co (Gainesville) and Columbia Co (Lake City) will be offering court weddings.

Unofficially, I suppose, all the other northern Florida counties are either going to discriminate against gay couples or refuse to marry anyone. Of course, I live in the district that elects representatives that claim Common Core is a gay indoctrination strategy, and then there are the nuttier nuts like Ted Yoho.

I am honestly trying to relocate as fast as I possibly can without going into bankruptcy looking for a job. Even Texas and Utah cannot be this bad. And I lived in rural Utah ...

Not all republicans think like these right wing fools. Stop stereotyping all republicans as hateful and ignorant. This is only the tea party component of the GOP that is pulling all these idiotic antics.

I was responding to kissthesky who stated correctly that republicans attack minorities (they even have a white supremacist for the house whip). Unfortunately, while the gay community is one of these minorities under attack, many of the gay "white" men on this thread have been racist right here on RJ, which makes it hard to care what they have to say about their own rights.

Straight people could say gay people are making mountains out of molehills over the right to marry. It's easy to diminish someone else's plight when it's not your own, and, disappointingly, many gay men on RJ are hypocrites in this respect.
