Hey guys, just wondering if anyone has been before, heard of it or what have you. Will be heading there next month for my birthday with a friend and to take in the festivities!

It is good fun, but incredibly, incredibly crowded indoors. We went last year and if you step into the bars they are so crowded that the addition of one person pushes everyone else sideways against the wall. Apparently fire concerns are not a thing.

That said, the people in Cologne are some of the nicest I've ever met and I've met some very great people there. So... enjoy but wear good shoes.

Yes, indeed! Fasching is great fun, and Köln is known as one of the great Karnevale cities. Fasching is actually a season running from now until Ash Wednesday (Aschen Mittwoch), with the high points during the last week with Lenten balls, parades, etc. You might check out the other German cities with noted Fasching celebrations, too, as you could easily get to several within the time frame you might be there. Basel in Switzerland is another noted location nearby, just up the Rhein from Köln. You might google "Fasching" references and see what's happening where this year.
