Apparently Rush Limbaugh did not do his research once again.
When I was in Paris, I see armed policemen all the time everywhere and sometimes even the military (including the French Foreign Legion) are patrolling the subway and public places (yes they are hot!)

There are two types of Police in France -
    The National Police

and the Gendarmes - "who are not civilians but are rather paramilitaries that fall under the supervision of the Defense Ministry. Despite the smiles, you can see that they, too, are armed."

You can see in all those pictures, the policemen and women are equipped with pistols and famas. The misconception that European countries "disarmed their policemen" is simply not true. I've been to Germany, France, Belgium, and Netherlands and out of all those countries, every police officers I've encountered are armed. The most armed police place I've been to was Frankfurt International Airport.

Paris is heavily patrolled by the Police..... in tourist areas most of the time.

Paris is like any big, major city. There is a legitimate need for sufficient police patrol and protection otherwise it would be bedlam.

Rush is doing his job. Helping the NRA sell guns, which fly off the shelves every time there's a shooting that makes a splash in the media. And people like Rush are there to make sure there's a splash.

I have always thought it horrid that the Gendarmes must fully button the gold shirt. :-)

My understanding was that the gendarmes are the national police, the ones outside of Paris, and the flics are police just for Paris. Mind you, I didn't read the whole following article, my memory is from the preface of a recent mystery book I read by Fred Vargas, an excellent French mystery writer:
