I believe that hate speech should be banned here.

    I am a newbie here.

Quiet Disturbingly,I have seen a lot of posts here that I would call as Hate Speech. As an example, I found a thread related to Ferguson and I saw a few people targeting the Ferguson protestors for protesting the unlawful killing of Michael Brown! I would deem such posts as racist and hence, hate speech. Also, in one thread, I saw posters referring to terrorists as "Islamic" terrorists. I think that it is Islamophobic and racist.

Posts like these perpetuate bias and discrimination against minorities. In Europe, online hate speech is banned and I think that in America, we should ban it too. Let us start from sites like RJ by doing it voluntarily.

You, whether a newbie or Sr. Member, should feel free to post what you feel is appropriate and representative of YOUR OWN thoughts.

Sensorship of ANY type is the answer to nothing and only further fuels ignorance. TRUST Me on this one, something truly stupid gets posted on here- it is generally addressed with lightning sped...especially amateur trolls.

As a "newbie" it is really unnecessary for you to feel you have to police RJ.

Thanks for the concern tho and welcome aboard!

    Well Europe has such laws.

And I feel it is for good measure. As a liberal, I think that most problems in this country are because of bigotry spewed by
a white supremacist hetero-normative patriarchal majority. If it was not the case, officer Darren Wilson would not be free, women would not be underrepresented in STEM fields, and I can go on and on. We were discussing about this in our social psychology class at UMich yesterday and our class voted in favor of the motion that online hate speech should be banned.

Perhaps your little class may wanna ask the schoolmarm what the potential results are of banning free speech. Of ANY kind.

You see, once the precedent is set it becomes easier to ban ANY speech or thought -- including your currently holier-than-thou version.

Banning speech and thoughts, however reprehensible some may be, does NOTHING to address the the issues, problems and basic ignorance that brought about the negative words and dullard thoughts in the first place.

Something to consider at recess today.

Then I move to ban the Quran and the Bible from the internet. They are filled with hate speech.

Well, I´m European and I really like the freedom of speech. I just googled gay discussion forum and RJ was the first (if I recall it right) on the list. I don´t know what you mean by saying, that in Europe any hate speech is not allowed. But what I do know, is that white europeans were killed in Paris by muslim terrorists for racist reason. So, do you mean, that we suppose stay still and accept what happened, just because some (e.g. you?) might consider that as a hate speech if we discuss it and share our thoughts?

Do you mean, that because we are gays, we shouldn´t have brains, just dicks and ass for fucking....is that what you are saying!? We should just keep our mouths shut and have sex...is that what you mean?

I don't know that RJ has the staff available or the ability to justify the cost of moderating the boards to that extent.

I know that there are other boards that have volunteer moderators but that gets controversial as well. Usually, moderators make sure that users keep to the terms agreed (which may include a code of conduct) when they signed up.

I don't think people should be calling each other names but I wish that people would not do it rather than needing to be moderated. I don't think that it is important that we agree on topics. Rather I think it is healthy to try and understand why a person feels a certain way.

For example, I know this guy at the gym that insists that everyone must own guns. He told me that I have to go out and buy a bunch of guns. I told he I was not going to do it and he told me that I had to. He believes that Obama, himself, is going to come to his home to take them away. He talks about Obama being born in Africa. And he likes to talk about how much more intelligent he is than other people because he reads a lot of stuff that most people don't. I don't agree with him and I don't try and change his mind. But I think it is interesting to try and understand how he came up with this stuff. The human brain is a trip sometimes.

I am studying at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. It is one of the top 25 universities in the world and one of the best public universities in US.

Also, I am a graduate student. So, all this mocking does not make me feel inferior because we know very well who are the inferior ones.

I am a true blooded Ann Arbor liberal. Well, you would know this if you guys could ever get to study and live here.

Your reaction is expected. My professor told me that the norms and power structures present in our society can be shaken up only by making laws against them and cannot be resolved by persuasion. You guys just proved his point.

Amateur trolling at its very lowest.

Your points were addressed. Quite adequately.

And there is not a "Professor" on Earth who would make such a ludicrous comment.

Btw...your desire to restrict the thoughts and speech of those you feel to be "inferior" reminds Me of a certain infamous historical figure that didn't do very well in the end either. He too became the butt of countless jokes and ultimate ridicule, not to mention the very personification of repression, sensorship, draconian law and ultimate murder all in the name of a Superior Race.

Maybe you should run THAT by your "professor" and see if he can guess who I am referring to.

And get better material to troll with.

My deepest of apologies. It must be the Buckeye in me that automatically assumes you are inferior and pedantic.
That, and the fact you sound as if you just come to this country, or you've never had an American PolySci class.

    --Quiet:
    adj. adjective
Making or characterized by little or no noise.
a quiet library; a quiet street; a quiet, well tuned engine.
Free of turmoil and agitation; calm.
a quiet lake; a quiet place in the country.
Providing or allowing relaxation; restful; soothing.
a quiet afternoon nap; a quiet tune on the flute.
    n. noun
The quality or condition of being quiet.
    v. verb
    To cause to become quiet.
    The teacher quieted the students.
To make (a title) secure by freeing from uncertainties or adverse claims as to the ownership.
    To become quiet.
The child wouldn't quiet down for me.

    Synonyms
    silent - still - noiseless - soundless

    --Quite:
    adv. adverb
    To the greatest extent; completely.
    quite alone; not quite finished.
    Actually; really.
    I'm quite positive about it.
    To a degree; rather.

    You are welcome. Unlock??

Oh, so now when you start losing the argument, you draw attention to a silly typo.

And BTW, it should be "as if you have just come to this country" and not "as if you just come to this country".

And why you did not correct "Cash" when he said "Sensorship" instead of "Censorship".

Learn to spell "Censorship" first. And it is not ludicrous. The law banning online hate speech is in effect in several countries of Europe such as United Kingdom. Do a Google search before you blabble. And it is easy to say that if someone disagrees with you, he is a troll. Just because you do not believe in my account, it will not change reality. You see, reality is not dependent on your perception.
