Canadians Have A Right To Assisted Suicide, High Court Says

'In a unanimous ruling, Canada's supreme court struck down the country's law that bans doctor-assisted suicide Friday. The court said the law denies people the right "to make decisions concerning their bodily integrity and medical care" and leaves them "to endure intolerable suffering."'

Well thank you Supreme Court! At least there is a modicum of common sense still left here. Stephen Harper and his harpies have been destroying all that Canada is as best he can, notably in his refusal to acknowledge science-based information and instead using his narrow minded, ideology-based methods to determine law in this country. I can only hope that enough people get out and vote in the upcoming election and turf this moron out on his ass.

I'm counting the days. The question is which of the other two morons do I want to replace him?

We don't need assisted suicide in the US. We have lax gun laws so you can DIY.

It'll be interesting to see how this turns out. One of the rulings I found troubling is that you can opt for euthanasia due to psychological pain, no terminal illness required, just that you're 18+.

Another troubling aspect is the many peoples' comments I've read on news topics about it. Generally, a lot of them are going to have their lights put out so they won't be a burden to others, or the gov't pension or disability or medical system which is the silliest reason I've heard yet, and rather dangerous thinking. It invites coercion via guilt, societally and peer-wise, to get snuffed.

That pshycological pain could be good if used properly for things like Alzheimer's/dementia, etc.

We need assisted suicide in the US as well. People deserve to die with dignity.

That's the one thing it CAN'T be used for, as the request for euthanasia has to come from the patient, and the patient must be of sound mind, so no.

And actually, you just fell into the trap so many already have. You'll have to explain to all those that bravely struggle to survive, even though death was or is inevitable, both past and present, how their courage is undignified.

well, I was actually talking about people shooting themselves to death...it is a messy way to die....I don't think it is courageous. And someone has to clean up that mess left behind.
