Grindr is very unstable.

Hi guys. This isn't about the culture of Grindr, but rather the application itself.

Anyone who has used Grindr for any period of time will agree that it is an unstable app. Sometimes messages don't get delivered, pictures won't send, profiles don't load properly, location is often off, blocking/favoriting doesn't always work like it should, the app crashes randomly, etc.

What I find perplexing is that the app has been around since early 2009. What could the reason be for an app to not be at least stable, 6 years after its release? Has the app had very high turnover on its development team? Is the $12/month they charge people for Grindr Xtra not enough funding to continue development?

I'm curious to know what y'all think the reason could be for such poor application development, compared to other applications.

@MindGarden, thanks for that thread referral.

OP: I agree wholeheartedly. I'd speculate that it's a simple and straight forward business decision. The calculus is the same in every business decision.

What is the cost of improving a functional but buggy OLD GRINDR, to a sleek and non-buggy NEW GRINDR.

What is the incremental increase in traffic or subscriptions we'll see after the investment from OLD GRINDR to NEW GRINDR.

Apparently, they've guessing or have done market research, and they know that the investment in improving OLD GRINDR to NEW GRINDR is not justified by the, apparently, limited incremental profit.

In short, it's "good enough" from a boardroom standpoint. Scarily, the same calculus happens with car and aviation safety. Welcome to capitalism.

There's no incentive for them to improve the app, if guys just put up with the quirks/bugs and keep using it.

Translation: sluts don't care about its stability problems. They're too busy looking for their next hookup.

Exactly! As long as the app performs the basics.. picture swapping, messaging, GPS.. They don't care about the apps aesthetics or stability.

It's probably their servers are overloaded and returning malformatted data back to the app. Those poor servers can't keep up with all those degenerate horny sluts madly tapping away on their screens frantically looking for their next tryst.

This is a possibility, but an app that has been around for 6 years should be able to meet its traffic demands with powerful enough servers.

Haven't checked lately, but I used to notice that all apps sort of melted down on Friday and Saturday nights, if you were downtown. The cellular data network was basically overloaded - after about 10, you couldn't connect to anything. People on land-lines could send you messages, which you received sporadically, but you couldn't respond.

Well... put away the phone and buy somebody a drink!

See the link above... the dude spent the money on real estate instead of servers.

Are you implying that applications catered towards the LGBT population are expected to perform poorly?
