Gyms in the bay area

I'll be spending 2 weeks in the San Francisco bay area (both Sunnyvale and San Fran) and I need a good bodybuilding/weightlifting gym to workout in while I'm there. I want free weights, squat racks, a 'brotherhood of the iron' type environment with serious lifters and not 24-Hour Fitness or Spectrum club or a chain gym.

I searched the net, but not a lot comes up. In some towns, I've stumbled across gyms that have been set up in industrial areas - real "Arnold" type places with serious dudes and all the right equipment. They're businesses that charge for membership, they're independent and well equipped - but they don't come up in Internet searches!

So, I'm looking for locals who can point me in the right direction. Any advice?

In SF you can check out World Gym, I think that might be more what you are looking for. But haven't been there in years.

The body builder type of gym have been pushed out by the dot coms. Try Crunch in Redwood city.

World gym or SF Fitness SOMA. The latter has about everything equipment wise. I was shocked they have a donkey calf machine. Never saw one before then.

Serious lifter here for a long time. You want a serious gym? Crunch (2330 Polk Street, S.F. - Russian Hill). They have deals for visitors or guys wanting just a temp. situation. Check it out. Also - in Santa Clara - Gold's Gym - 1900 Duane Avenue - just next door to Sunnyvale.

These are both serious gyms, where a guy can get a thoroughly hard work out.

the only gym chain that will have locations in both places is 24 and equinox. otherwise, it's gold's in the far south bay and world gym in the city.
