I think most of us would agree that picking your nose in public is a no-no.

What things like that have you seen others do in public that surprised you?

It doesn't surprise me, but I don't see how people are okay with having phone conversations in public. I feel awkward that everyone else can hear my conversation and unless it just cannot wait, I do not talk to people on the phone in public. It's rude.

Way back when I was in grade school I would take a raisin and squeeze it out of its skin and then take that and in front of the girls make it look like I picked it out of my nose, and eat it. For some reason they thought I was disgusting.

When you cough or clear your throat do you swallow the phlegm? I had a doctor that was grossed out by that.

Not much different than eating your boogers when you think about it.

I have a friend who flosses in public. I wanted to tell him to stop but it seems like no one else was bothered by it except me, so I kept quiet. icon_rolleyes.gif

Actually I also find people using toothpick after meal at the dining table gross too. They should go to the restroom. icon_rolleyes.gif

People clearing their throat or nose among a group of strangers. By clearing your throat I don't mean just a simple cough, but where the mucous comes out. Same with cleaning your nose. Just do it privately. It's so common here in Europe, where people would just take out their napkin and start making all weird noises while cleaning their throat/nose.

Just that. I was in a place where a woman came in contact with objects she hands back and forth to others. Watched her dig in her ear and then pick her nose. If her butt was accessed easily she may pick that too. I was in Walmart and the cashier stuck his finger up his nose. Straight people can be so disgusting, can't they?

I'm glad you mentioned this, and especially glad as you are only 20 years old. There's hope, yet!

This behavior is part of the death of civility, as people, with the help of technology, become increasingly self-absorbed.

All of these necessary personal tasks are disgusting when performed in public. What part about courtesy and good manners, however trite they may sound to some, don't some people understand?

The irony is that sniffling and swallowing the mucus or coughing and swallowing it are normal functions of your body protecting your lungs from contaminants. So much of our "normal" functions are stigmatized by "polite society" its ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, there's a time and a place, but to expect someone to NOT EVER do something that their body is SUPPOSED to do is ridiculous.

I'm a police officer, and spend hours and hours in a dry car. I remember it was like 0600 once and I was parked on an empty road and had to get something out of my nose. So yeah, I was picking my nose.

This bus full of kids pulled up next to me, and after a few seconds I looked over at it. They were all plastered to the window, pantomiming picking their nose and pointing and me.

I waved and laughed. They caught me.

I've been tempted to listen carefully to their conversations and later ask them questions about it. Perhaps then they'd not make so many 'phone calls in public. Usually the conversations are no more than trivia.

What prompted me to ask this question is that a memory popped up. I had a coworker and she was shocked that her former office mate would clip his nails while sitting at his desk when she was also in the office. It's not something that I would have thought of as being inappropriate around others. The way she said it it sounded it like she thought it was as bad as picking your nose in public.

Picking your nose in public is VERY tricky, but I'd venture to say we've all done it at one time or another. My dad used to do it in front of us all the time. He did it out of boredom and sometimes from anxiety (coping mechanism). If my dad got to sit somewhere for a prolonged period of time at home, up went the hand to the nose and he'd pick away. He knew better than to do it at church, however.

I'm a teacher and sitting in the back of the room one day waiting for a teacher to finish his lesson, I saw a kid picking his teeth with his fingers, trying to remove food debris.

Taking medication in front of strangers is also weird, I think.

We'd like to think no one notices us when we do these things, but sadly someone always does. As a teacher, I have to be especially careful.
