To those of you who are religious or spiritual, do any of you receive ashes on your foreheads on Ash Wednesday? And if you do, why do you do this? Many see this as a Catholic custom, but it has become quite common in a lot of other churches as well. I'm not Catholic, but I have gone to a church in the past on Ash Wednesday where they smear ashes on your forehead in the form of a cross. I've never really liked this practice because I grew up as seeing this only as a Catholic custom. But I've noticed that many churches that are not Catholic do this on Ash Wednesday, too. It's a reminder that because we are sinful, we are going to die and return to dust. But because of Jesus' death and his bodily resurrection our bodies will not stay dust, but will be resurrected on the last day.

Many years ago, I told a friend's dad that he had gotten newsprint on his fingers and rubbed some on his forehead.

    It was Ash Wednesday. icon_lol.gif

I'm an Episcopalian. Ashes may be imposed on the heads of participants in the Ash Wednesday service as a sign on the forehead. The imposition of ashes has been practiced on Ash Wednesday since the ninth century. This is a reminder of mortality and penitence. The ashes are imposed with the words, "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return".

What kind of a gay forum is this? I was hoping you were referencing the fabulous 1973 Elizabeth Taylor film where Liz rocks Valentino in her final glam role as a middle aged hag who, in a last ditch effort to save her troubled marriage to Henry Fonda (playing himself, a cold bastard in real life), has radical plastic surgery which turns her into...Elizabeth Taylor! Despite befriending a gay photographer during their respective facelift recoveries who introduces her to the European jet set at a fancy ski resort where she embarks on an affair with a hot young Helmut Berger, the poor sympathetic Liz discovers it's all for naught.
