Wearing sports jerseys

Anyone have thoughts on wearing jerseys with a player's name on it?

I have thought for a while that once you got past your mid-20s or so, it was kind weird to wear a jersey with the name of a player on it, especially if the player was 10, 20 or more years younger than you. Seems there are many more hockey fans than other sports who do this and at least here in Chicago, the guys who wear the jerseys with players' names on them are largely really out of shape and look fat even when the jerseys are XXL.

So, because I thought it was creepy in a way to wear a jersey of someone half your age, the only jerseys I have had are of dead or retired players, like Chicago Blackhawk great Keith Magnusson and Hall of Fame White Sox catcher Carlton Fisk.

But I've recently had the fuels of my fandom reignited by the Chicago Blackhawks and I've found a really cool-looking Hawks jersey with Jonathan Toews (one of the cutest guys in the NHL) name and number on it at a great price from a wholesaler and I'd kinda like to buy it and wear it but I still kind of think it's a bit weird to wear a jersey of a player who's like 20 years younger than you.

Oh, and i remember seeing an episode of the "Queer Eye" show and they mocked a guy who had a bunch of hockey jerseys (excuse me, 'sweaters') in his closet. Not that it matters what those guys say, but...

    Any thoughts either way?

I think you need to set yourself free of some of these odd fashion rules you have and proudly wear what you want.

I don't think it is a big deal to wear a jersey of a team that you support. I wouldn't wear one to a wedding, funeral or work function, but if you are at a game, why not?

I always thought it would be cool to have a No. 4 Bobby Orr Blackhawks sweater, since he played like, 3 games for the Hawks at the very end of his career. icon_wink.gif

I think it's entirely appropriate. It seems more acceptable in UK/Europe (football jerseys with their favorite hero - lots of BECKHAM shirts!)

My lab mate used to wear a Patriots jersey to work every friday. Mostly Bruschi (her favorite), sometimes a few of the other players.

Since we work in a casual environment and she was a huge Pats fan, I never thought it odd, even though she was 31.

You guys are cool. Thanks for your responses. I wish you all were local and we'd all be able to hang out and watch some games at my local sports bars, clad in our favourite jerseys.

Personally, the only name and number I wear on my back is my own icon_cool.gif

I would only wear a sports jersey with my own name on it.......not a pro team's jersey (unless I was under contract LOL))

    Funny topic...

Several times a week, I can be found wearing a BELTRAN, REYES or now, SANTANA jersey...in black, white or gray!!! I'm a huge fan and proud of it!!

And if I'm not wearing a jersey with one of their names on it...I am often in an orange or blue t-shirt with one of their names on it...and/or WRIGHT, MARTINEZ...or even old school favorites ---> VENTURA and PIAZZA!

Brings me to a funny story (funny to me)...i'm 39...when I moved into my current apartment 8 years ago...I had hung up my favorite sports posters...mostly METS and a John Starks THE DUNK poster....well, one sister told me it was childish and i should take them down...my other sister said keep them up as long as you like...you're passionate about sports and those teams...who cares what anyone else thinks!! SO THEY STAYED...for another year or so lol because when I re-painted my place, I decided I liked the simplicity of color and a few photos (shea stadium, Tom Seaver collectors cover of the Daily News 1969, etc)...guess they may have both had a point?? icon_smile.gif

I never wear anything with a brand on it. I've always wondered why people pay for that shit. Whether it's a sports jersey or Polo shirt, why would you pay to wear an advertisement?

I don't buy anything BECAUSE of the brand...but if I like something, I buy it. As for sports jerseys, which is what this thread is about, I wear my team and its colors because I like them!!!! Simply like them ;)

It's not a big deal to me. It's not any different from wearing a Madonna shirt (in a sense). You're a fan, and you want people to know, I'm cool with that.
