Spiritual obsession with the Phallus in ancient cultures

Please keep an open mind..Just some speculation here.

It's well known that ancient cultures had a deep respect and understanding of the power of the phallus. You can see it incorporated into architecture everywhere, both ancient and modern. (Washington Monument, anyone?) Rituals were based around it, costumes, idols, etc were also created. I think that there is a spiritual aspect of the phallic symbol and gay men are possibly more in tune with this aspect than the rest of the population.

I remember when I took an "African Psychology"(I don't remember the exact name of the class) in college, we had to read a book on tribal beliefs, and there was an entire chapter devoted to homosexuality. These tribes openly accepted gay men and saw them as sort of empathetic gatekeepers between the 2 sexes. This makes sense to me seeing as gay men do seem to be more empathetic and able to "counsel" people on various issues. Whether this skill is innate or came to fruition because we ourselves have suffered oppression and can better relate to others, remains to be seen.

I do believe that gay men possess different personality and spiritual aspects than others... possibly because of the experience of being oppressed for so long. Perhaps this made us stronger as a community and "hardened" and conditioned our minds for future hardships...something that the general population will never experience.

Please note what I am going to say is NOT meant to be slut shaming so save your breath. But anyone who has been around young gay men for a period of time knows that the larger phallus is the dominant in mouse groups. Young horny men are competitive when it comes to who has the biggest and best penis. Gay men will do a variety of things to find a "mate" who has a large member and sleep with them. Perhaps this has led to gay men evolving to be more mentally and physically competitive? The phallus is also caricatured and grossly exaggerated in ancient art all the way back to recorded history. Although I think it's interesting to note that in certain periods a smaller penis was actually seen as more aesthetically pleasing. (Statue of David) Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was believed that soldiers in some cultures actually gained physical strength during battle if they had had sexual relations with other men or even young boys.

I'm not a history, science, or religion expert..I just think it's interesting to see how "phallus worship" aka penis obsession has evolved, and how it's reverence can be traced so far back in history. I do think that this has had an effect on how gay men have evolved, how we think, and how we tend to be more empathetic towards others.Whether this is spiritually or mystically related, or whether it's just a complex sexual evolution is not yet known... Just fun to think about. Perhaps the symbol of the penis exerts some unknown force or power on the world around us.

Or maybe it's just really fun to give and get a blow job without all the mumbo jumbo...

I find religious/spiritual justifications for being gay as laughable as religious/spiritual condemnations. Why do we have to make up a cosmic explanation for why gay sex is awesome????

I never said it was true, just interesting and fun to think about. And my entire post want referring to sex but also to the empathetic nature of gay men in particular, due to our sexuality and various struggles growing up.

It's only laughable if you have a closed mind. Some of us live mundane daily lives not questioning anything around us, then some choose to think deeper about certain things. Nothing wrong with either scenario but to call contemplation on different aspects of life and "being" laughable is a bit condescending. We don't know the hows and whys of everything out there or why we're made or evolved to be a certain way. Your comment had nothing to do with the topic at all.

Well, I wouldn't call the religious/ritual stuff an obsession. Or even particularly homoerotic.

The penis is the most sensitive and distinctive part of the male body. It's a symbol of manhood, with everything that entails (strength, fighting, courage, sex, etc). It's also the main conduit for sexual energy and sexual pleasure, both of which are pretty much the basic drive of mankind, and probably the most intense physical pleasure a person can experience. That's magnified by a thousand in a pre-industrial world where you spend most of your time either farming or hunting, and your free time eating or fucking.

Also, penises make babies. That's live some metaphysical shit right there.

Spirituality, especially primitive spirituality, is based on people's experiences, the way they see and feel the natural and human world, and what's important to them.

And gay or straight, a penis is just way too damn important not to be the focus of some kind of supernatural attention in those circumstances.

The ancients didn't know modern medical science & anatomy. They didn't realize a female had a microscopic egg inside her, that had to join with a male sperm to form a child, a 50/50 proposition.

They thought instead that a man "planted his seed" inside a woman, she contributing nothing but a place for that seed to grow. She was no more than the field in which you planted a germ of wheat.

Therefore, since a man alone created new life in the ancient view, his phallus was honored & worshipped. The sole source of children and new generations.

Though suppressed, destroyed and hidden by Christians in later centuries, surviving examples of phallus worship from the ancient world have survived. Good examples come from the buried cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Wall frescoes in villas, that contemporary children would presumably have seen, depict the male god Priapus with a giant erection. Bronze oil lamps in homes were fashioned as erect, uncapped male cocks, the flame emanating from the tip.

In Rome the annual Saturnalia festival featured naked mid-teenage boys running through the streets. It was a great honor to be selected for this ritual, the sons of Roman Senators and other prominent persons being chosen.

They ran completely naked, carrying 2 leather balls on a string, representing testicles, that they swung to strike women. Women wanting children would step out from the crowd along the street, hoping to be struck, thus increasing their presumed chance of motherhood.

Yeah, phallus and male genitalia worship is ancient. But today we know that a woman is just as important as the man. I worship the phallus myself, but that's a gay thing, not connected to fertility. icon_wink.gif

    Ah, yes, the contemplative life.

I take your hand dear brother and we go into the mountains to the monastery and think and pray and meditate.

Google Images of St. Francis praying by Zurbaran.

If you break it down to simple terms, something when i was thinking on writing a sci fi screen play about, the conservative or 'religious' aspect of the penis is a procreation tool (no pun intended), that is all, in basic terms. This is why conservatives, deeply religious ones, think that gay sex is 'gross' and or 'abomination', because gay sex, does not fulfill the procreation tool's prime objective. Gay men use the procreation tool for pleasure and have a much better understanding of its, alternative use(s). Gay men are also more familiar or in tune with the male pleasure centers of the entire male body, like prostate and arm pits, much like lesbians know the female body better than straight men do.

If you really think about it, the opposite sexes are really not compatible in the pleasure centers of each others bodies. It is only the mechanical aspect of inserting the procreation tool into the factory. That is why when you watch gay porn vs straight porn, gay porn is much more erotic, straight porn is much more mechanical. How many times have we heard how straight women fake an orgasm? Do we hear about lesbians faking orgasm? Straight men have to 'wait' for the women to be ready, gay men, there is no waiting, its like we automatically know. (Gay men are from Mars). Straight men like watching lesbians, because they learn pleasure from them icon_idea.gif

As part of my sci fi, fiction screen play series. Women, in the future, ages 15-35, are held in baby making factories run by, male only, a one world religion corporation. (Yes, these women are basically slaves for 20 years of their life, after their usefulness of baby making has ended, they are released and free to do whatever they want). Men are free to have sex with them after their release, for pleasure, since their baby making days are over. While all men await their ordered babies, their sperm donated to the factory, they enjoy each others company, work, hang out, have sex, for pleasure. There is no such thing as gay men anymore. In my story, all men have evolved and are educated about the male anatomy and all its pleasure centers. How this story evolved (backstory) in the past was because the religious right obsession over procreation, that is all they cared about, so in the future, they created baby making factories to keep the races and bloodlines going. In my future story, we have separated the procreation process from the pleasure.

My sci fi, original concept, idea and plans of this fiction screenplay, is copy righted

The book you speak of is called The Spirit of Intimacy and the tribe you speak of is called The Dagara. One favorite of mine that happened to find me.

I'm not well versed in phallic worship and architecture but what I can appreciate about the ancients is their perspective of believing that there is more to a person than just an outside appearance and that just because a particular sex can display qualities opposite of that sex that it wasn't something bad. It was celebrated which is why through many tribes many of them were also those that seemed guidance through them or they were spiritual leaders.

I've been worshipping the phallus since the day I popped a boner as a small child and went to my mom and naively said, "Fix it mommy, I broke it!"

She explained it was working just fine and doing what it was suppose to do. I was enthralled with my phallus from that day forward. And have been worshipping it ever since.

UndercoverMan saidI've been worshipping the phallus since the day I popped a boner as a small child...

I can't remember when I got my first hardon. I never really thought about my dick when I was very young, it was just down there and useful when I needed to pee, something I otherwise ignored but needed to keep out of public view or I'd get in trouble. But I very clearly remember when I saw my first stiffie, and learned what else my cock could do besides pee.

I was 9 at boys summer camp, and we were overnight hiking. Over 20 of us went down to a stream to skinny dip, our 2 college-age camp counselors also stripping naked. For some of us, myself included, it was the first time we'd ever seen a mature man's bush down there. I was thinking: "Why do they have all that hair around their dicks? **I** don't have that. What's it for?"

But then one of our 2 counselors with us popped a boner. I have no idea why, he just did, standing there on a rocky outcropping on the stream's edge. Maybe it was the breeze on his dick, or raging young hormones, or seeing a couple dozen little boys naked, I dunno. Most of us had never seen one of those, either, not something our fathers or older brothers would have shown us.

But his cock was standing upright & proud, I couldn't take my eyes off it, a huge thing to my eyes. Why would it do that, is it normal, can mine do the same thing, for what purpose?

Some boys my same age in 1958 already knew about those things, though, yelling that he had a "hardon", a word I'd never heard before. He didn't seem overly embarrassed by it, though his fellow counselor was laughing loudly at the sight, and then he jumped into the cold water to swim it off and lose it.

A few years later I was shimmying up a tree in the woods (I've always been more butch than you might guess, more at home in the deep woods as a kid than in my own backyard), I think maybe around 11 years old. And I got hard from the rubbing sensation, maybe that was my first time getting stiff, as far as I can remember. I started shimmying up trees more often, basically humping them, and finally had my first (dry) orgasm that way, which felt really great.

That went on for about a year, I wore out some pants that way against the tree bark, until one day without warning I had my first ejaculation. What a mess in my tighty-whities, all this white cream! I had no idea what had happened, I was afraid I'd broken something!

So I read up and learned what was going on. And by then my buddies were talking about jerking off with own your hand. So I tried that instead, and never went back to tree humping, and wearing out my dungarees. icon_biggrin.gif

It isn't even necessarily about an open mind though, because you can enjoy different ways of expression without taking it all to heart.

Just like with religion, undeniably out of that came a ton of beautiful art and music and writing and thinking, all sorts of expression which anyone can appreciate whether someone's a fundamentalist or atheist. You don't have to buy into something with your own capital to reap some benefit: thus capitalism, haha.

If your thinking is that people are spiritual beings then why would spirits having any particular experience of corporeal life be, ultimately, necessarily, significantly different from each other in spirit?

If your thinking is that people are spiritual beings and that these such spiritual beings are having such and such human existences, then does it not follow that as it is above so it is below, perhaps because by a basic nature, that regardless of its physical expression, its essence is by the cohesiveness of reality immutable. Are you in the world or of it?

If your thinking is that people are spiritual beings and if it is above as it is below and if experience tells us that regardless of experience, of culture, perhaps even of time, that people are all pretty much the same, that kindnesses and cruelties exist everywhere, for example, then, again, why would you presume that "gay men possess different...spiritual aspects"?

Conservative Christians have always been just as obsessed with the phallus as the ancient Greeks were, but in a different way.

On my first visit to Mykonos, my buddy and I spent a day looking over the ruins on the nearby isle of Delos. We saw the remains of enormous phallic sculptures that the early missionaries had systematically destroyed.

When we toured the museum, the curator - a 60-something Greek man - pulled us aside and allowed us to walk through an entire wing that was closed to the public, on our own. The main attraction was a large showcase filled with marble penises that the early Christians had broken off of various statues.

On our way out we thanked him sincerely. He pulled my bud close and whispered in his ear, "You have beautiful bodies!"

    Serious Question:

If there's a cute muscle muffin guy between 18 and 34--muffin pecs and muffin biceps and triceps and ribbed lats--it's pleasurable to both homosexuals for him to raise his arm, flex, and you kiss his pec and nipple and rub your face into his arm pit as you go to kiss the side of his bicep BUT a woman isn't likely to enjoy that as much as giver or receiver, even if she's a Reebok fitness model?

Nope, not about her enjoying it or not, its she doesn't even know that the area is a mans erogenous zone, straight men will play with women's breasts, but not like lesbians do to each other, but straight women for the most part do not do the same for men, "nipple play" for men is a gay men's term and action. And of course just to interject, we all know that women are horrible at giving blowjobs. Why?, if opposite sex couples are supposedly 'so compatible' in the sex department, over thousands of years, you would think women would have learned by now what pleases a man? And same reversed, men lacking what pleases women. Same sex couples and peoples have the inherent ability to please one another without having to 'learn it', therefore it comes naturally to us.

That is the whole premise of my screenplay, to separate the act of procreation (as a mechanical feat) and the pleasure the entire body can bring. In a way, the method is capturing Tantric sensation for men with other men, when most men, other than gay, today are only two dimensional and or have never experienced an entire body 'orgasm' or other erotic sensations because straight men are taught from early age that their penis is for procreation, only the minute long mechanical-ness. Women on the other hand, have experienced this full body enlightenment many times over and have admitted that together with other women, they have achieved the ultimate pleasure as compared with the mechanical-ness of their men.

Today, we know, through in vitro fertilization, our society has already taken the procreation part separate from the pleasure. Now that we have accomplished this and will continue, lets now concentrate on the pleasure part, especially for all men. icon_idea.gif
