L.A. - Gayland?

I scheduled a plane ticket somewhat last minute (leaving next weekend) to visit L.A. and stay with my friend, though he'll be at work for the week. I've traveled alone a few times, but always in New York where I know what I'm doing.

So my question is two fold: what are some general guidelines to fun when traveling (essentially) alone, and to the L.A. guys: what specifically should I do!

I wasn't sure if this should go in the travel section, lmk if it should.

LA's a big place. What part of town will you be in?

If the weather's nice, head down to the beach, rent a bike and ride the Santa Monica Bay Bike Trail. It runs along the beach from the south end of Malibu all the way down to Torrance, with a couple detours around Marina del Rey and Redondo Beach's King Harbor. It makes for a nice half or full day, and there are plenty of places along the way to stop for a beer or a bite to eat.

As for traveling by yourself... just relax and enjoy it. That is all.

It depends on what you're looking for. Are you renting a car here to drive around? taking the metro or bus would be a hassle. Do you have a travel guide (gay) book on Los Angeles? I always use the TOP 10 guide (Los Angeles). If you want the gay nightlife experience, cruise over to West Hollywood, or Silverlake, there's a couple of bars in Venice too. As for guys, lol, just get drunk and pick them up?? lol jk, I suggest visiting the Getty center, Hollywood, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Hollywood-Chinese and Dolby Theater and Santa Monica/West side/Malibu. If you do drive around, watch for the signs/meter parking, don't get a ticket or towed. Parking in LA is sort of a big problem.

I'm a big fan of PUMP, the restaurant/bar owned by Lisa VanderPump. Everytime I go to LA, I always go to this place and order a Coconut Mojitos/best mojitos in town. (It's on N. Robertson and Santa Monica, next to HERE and THE ABBEY).

Yea, I was wondering what the public transportation situation was there. I'm a city boy so I much prefer bus/rail even if it takes a little bit longer. Are the routes good?

What part of LA will you be staying in? What things interest you most? That will help narrow it down. LA is huge and there are always tons of things to do. It would be best to focus on what interests you the most: types of art, science, galleries, beaches, shopping, live entertainment, nature, tourist stuff, amusement parks, gay bars, architecture, etc.

Some areas are better at public transportation than others.

Lol I never take public transportation in LA but I noticed that the Blue or red bus #2?? I think run from Santa Monica to West Hollywood with several stops at central LA. I think it's $2 a ride? not sure, but yeah, you might as well take a cab back to your friend place if you plan on drinking heavy. BTW, I found this Metro LA map for you.

Thanks LAXWill! I'll be staying downtown around the Jefferson area.

I'm mostly interested in gay things and beaches during my trip. I enjoy art and music festivals and lots of other things but I get plenty of those in Cleveland and NYC, I want some tacky, slutty gay adventures.

Yep, seconds on BFD at Fubar. It's a fun time, and the crowd is a good mix in terms of age, "scene" (bear, twink, jock, prep...), socio-economic status, etc. Unlike some of the more central WeHo joints that can be very geared toward a particular demographic.

There's a slick app that covers all the mass transit
    http://www.metro.net/mobile/mobile-resources/

My cousin was just visiting and used it to get around from Hermosa Beah to downtown, WeHo, Westwood, and Silver Lake without a snag.

It's gonna be hot and sunny this weekend. The bars on the main drag (Santa Monica Blvd and San Vincente in WeHo) will be hopping on Sunday afternoon.

Or, if you like your guys shirtless, the beach will be packed too...
