Tobacco Kills Two Out of Three Smokers

"According to a four-year follow-up study with more than 200,000 men and women, as many as two in every three cigarette smokers will die from this habit. The work, published in BMC Medicine this week, also estimated that smokers will die 10 years earlier than non-smokers."

I find it amazing that not only do we subsidize tobacco farming, but we even permit growing that poison. And as for those who continue to smoke, that to me betrays an essentially illogical - if not self-destructive - psyche that I've no desire to probe any further.

MuchMoreThanMuscle saidAnd what about nonsmokers who are forced to tolerate secondhand smoke? In my case I have smokers all around me and below me smoking outside my apartment. I can never leave my windows open for more than an hour before some asshole lights up near me.

That is awful. icon_mad.gif That'd drive me crazy. You should consider moving away.

I'm trying to do the same. My neighbors are such *ssholes. One of them smokes pot in front of my house sometimes. icon_mad.gificon_mad.gif

Wait a minute, it is one thing if nature terminates your life which is known as dying from natural causes. However, it is a different situation when the careless, health hazards habits of a few can eventually negatively impact everyone else. That there is wrong, period. If smokers want to poison themselves with deadly nicotine than that is fine. But they have no legitimate right imposing their cancerous, filthy, stinking habit upon others and having a negative impact on other people's health and life.

When smoking hit its peak in the late 1950s and early 1960s, about 75% of American men and 52% of American women smoked. Surely that says something about the ability of people to think rationally and clearly.

At that time, smoking was considered normal and not-smoking was considered abnormal. The mother of a friend of mine actually apologized for not smoking; she said that she had tried to learn to smoke but it gave her a headache. Those of us who wisely chose not to smoke were expected to explain our non-conforming decision. We were considered rude for requesting people not to smoke in our cars or homes. Avoiding second-hand smoke was next to impossible. It's amazing that such a noxious addiction became socially acceptable.

    No it's not.

I don't want to have to pay for them.

Actually you will pay far more for the people who don't smoke and live to be 100 and spend the last 15 or 20 years of their life in a nursing home due to old age related maladies, than the smokers who die of smoking related illnesses like lung cancer, emphysema, or heart disease in their 50s, 60s or 70s.
