Nice, clean cut Lut'ran boys! Thanks for posting the video, which reminded me of Johnny McGovern's "Soccer Practice."

Jonny McGovern's "Soccer Practice" was way hotter, daring and funnier than this. The drag cheerleaders always cracked me up. One can debate the relative music value, this is old now from back when Jonny was in his prime, but it's difficult to argue with yellow jocks and posing straps.

Quickly cross referenced the YouTube account, and it appears to be MLC, Martin Luther College, a liberal arts college in Wisconsin. The inordinate amount of "Wisconsin badgers" shirts corroborates the MLC conclusion.

Can't be sure, but I guess MLC.

The Upper Midwest would make sense, since that's where I saw those shower poles, or towers, used the most in college locker rooms. I used some gang showers where there around 12 of these installed.

Quite the sight as gym classes ended and dozens of guys rushed to shower before their next class, and they packed in closely together. The concept was sound, if not popular as US guys became more shy in recent years - more efficient space utilization, and easier to service the plumbing compared to burying the pipes behind tile walls.

    BOLD TEXT GOES HERE

I wish to high heaven you had said "service the pipes" so that we could have, perhaps, one of the top 10 puns in RJ history. icon_cool.gif

P.S., I'm drinking an orange blossom, watching Shark Tank with my b/f, and am staying in tonight (we're going out BIG tomorrow), and on RJ for at least the next hour. Hope you're commenting more tonight!

Interesting comments; do you reckon that young men still use those open showers these days or do they resort to the private ones since they have a choice?

They still have those shower poles here in Appleton at the YMCA. There are no private showers there at all. Most of the schools in the area also still have these shower poles and community showers. The sports teams still use them, but most kids no longer shower at school after their phy ed classes. Especially at the beginning of the school year and the end of May when temps can get really warm, there is lots of complaints with body odor after phy ed classes because most refuse to use these community showers. It's very costly to remodel these shower rooms with private showers and most schools have never had the funding to do it.

I was on the Notre dame crew team. We had open showers as of 2006. Of course, in the dorms we had closed showers.

Of course we used them. When you're on a team, you get really close. You eat together, party together, practice together, etc. It's second nature to shower with them. It's not weird at all. It'd only be weird with strangers. The only judgement people give is when a person fails to wear 'shower shoes', because that's just gross haha.

Incidentally, our showers were a big room, with shower heads every few feet along the wall (i.e., not the poles as depicted here). We could see the pipe, so yeah, it probably makes servicing it easier, and it definitely saves space. When you have 40 men that need to shower at the same time, that would require 4x as much space, easy, even with really small individual/private showers.

    Edit:

And I took ballet, and the dressing room is group/communal and not private. The men and women are separated, but you have to get butt-naked in front of everyone haha. I never thought of it as sexual, but yeah, there are lots of dicks, jocks, underwear, and smells of musk and cologne. It always seemed 'normal' at the time.

The OP video has both the shower poles and private showers with curtains. Many colleges have multiple shower rooms, sometimes with different gym buildings. And yeah, the teams tend to get the open showers. Or for this video those may even have been the women's curtained showers they were allowed to use for the filming.

In the "old days" all the college men would take showers, it was more or less expected, and in high school the boys were usually required by the coaches who herded you in there, no exceptions. Therefore speed was essential in the shower design, and private cubicles could never handle everyone in 5 minutes, you'd never have enough of them.

In fact there used to be a pass-through shower room design, used in grammar school through high school, that was sorta like a car wash. You walked through a kind of hallway, with showerheads on both walls, the water temperature fixed, and you basically never stopped moving forward until you exited.

You soaped up between the breaks in the water streams, using actual bars of soap, liquid soap being decades away. Not too common, an early 20th Century design in the US that's obsolete now. But it handled a lot of boys quickly between classes, the assembly line approach.

Martin Luther College is in MN; it's operated by the WI ELS.

I was a supernumerary in the SF Opera's 1987 performance of "Aida," with Leontyne Price and Placido Domingo. Believe it or not, the opera house had locker rooms and showers, which we used to get the red ochre body makeup off of us. You can imagine what it was like to have several screaming opera queens in the showering crowd of about 50 "supers," along w/ a few REALLY HOT bodybuilders to carry Amneris on her litter during the Triumphal March. One guy deputized himself the official back scrubber; another one went into a fit when someone took his towel, leading him to angrily strut around the locker room demanding to know, "Who stole my Mickey Mouse towel?!" We all had a blast and my fellow supers - BBs included, God bless 'em! - took me out to celebrate by 35th birthday midway thru the season. If you like opera and want to get involved, it's a great way to do so and make some chump change at the same time.

The Y in Appleton is very much like a gay bath house and has more gays there then any other fitness club in the area because the showers are the communal style. The men's locker room also has it's own steam room and hot tub that are used mostly by gay men and there is a lounge in the men's locker room where guys lounge nude. A lot of str8's won't go there because it has so many gay men there and they know that gays go there just to see hot naked men and lounge nude there with their gay friends. So it's pretty much become a gay Y because there is little privacy offered for those who don't want to be seen nude by gay men. The Y knows that most of it's clientel is gay and they prefer to keep it that way, so there are no plans to install any private showers.

I never had any private showers in elememtary, middle, high, or even college. They all had either the tower style or open communal on the wall. And it was always mandatory to shower before going to your next class. We were not allowed to skip showering after a phy ed class. And when we played a game of basketball in phy ed class, one team was designated to be the skins team and everyone on that team had to take their shirt off. We didn't have reversible type shirts or these different colored mesh shirts that they put over their shirts now to form a team.

You were in the same generation as I was. Boys and men were much more at ease with their nudity in the company of their own peers then they are today. The urinals in men's restrooms had no privacy whatsoever in school or any other public facility for that matter. They either were open individual urinals on the wall or was one long urinal trough style where everyone just lined up to piss in the trough, or there was the freestanding circle style urinal where everyone lined around in a circle to piss together. The old MECCA arena where the Milwaukee Bucks use to play had these round freestanding urinals in the restrooms. As was already mentioned with the communal showers, these style urinals were for the purpose of have large groups of men and boys being able to piss quickly without having to wait in line. Same thing with the showers. I can remember showering with 20-25 other boys in school and men in college all at the same time. This way there was no waiting for a urinal or shower in the morning. I always showered together with my team mates. By showering nude together it helped bond us together as a team and it taught us not to be embarrassed by our nudity among peers of the same gender. But water pressure was very weak when you had that many guys showering at the same time. But when I was in school and college, there was no open homosexuality. It was not considered appropriate to display any expressions of homosexuality. The only place where it was appropriate to be open with your homosexuality was a gay bar. Any regular bar or public place was not an appropriate place for any gay talk or gay mannerisms of any kind.

Yes, and well said. I think we had a thread going earlier about the [former?] custom for boys to swim nude through HS, even in swim team practice, but not at meets. And, on open swim rec nights, older men who went to the HS pools did so, too. I always liked, among other things, the juxtaposition of sub-zero winter temps outside the glass block windows of the pool with the relatively tropical warmth inside. By the time I'd get home, only two blocks away, my chlorine saturated hair would often freeze. Yes, it got - and stayed! - cold back then, too!

In many sports stadiums there are still 'trough' style urinals where (often drunk) men just whip it out.

(Apparently ND really polices their trademark, almost impossible to find an ND basketball gif so this'll have to do for now)

Yeah, the demolished King Dome in Seattle had those, in all the many men's restrooms. Of stainless steel, all connected together around 3 sides of a urinal room, sorta like cattle feeding troughs. Gawd, it was noisy with dozens of guys pissing at once, a lot like rain on the tin roof of a shed.

But the guys didn't have a toilet stall option, because women took those over. They'd enter the mens room, clearly able to see (and hear) us pissing away, because the lines for the ladies rooms were too long. Architectural plans for sports stadiums many decades ago made assumptions that few women would be attending, so that female accommodations were built that became inadequate for the later demands of the 1990s.

This is kind of off the topic, but I have never been shy or embarrassed to be nude around male peers. But when I was a younger, I did not like guys who were a lot older then me to see me nude (i.e phy ed teacher, coach, my dad, even my doctor etc. I guess I felt like some of them got sexual pleasure from seeing all us guys nude and probably some of them did. lol When I was in college, I got a job at Osco Drug and the manager said I needed a physical as part of my employment there. Because he was a licensed doctor, he said he could save me the money and do it himself in his office for free. I said that was ok, but I had no idea he was going to give me a digital rectal exam. I didn't mind dropping my pants and underwear in his office and coughing because I was use to that from other doctors. But when he put gloves on and told me to bend over his desk so he could check my prostate, he caught me off guard because I hadn't ever had a rectal exam yet. He asked me if I ever had one and I said no. He said it won't hurt, if I just relax because he was just going to feel my prostate. I always loved fingering myself and fucking myself with toys, but I never had anyone else yet stick their fingers up my ass. He told me I was so full that I needed to masterbate more. He asked me if I was sexually active and I said not yet. He said he could tell because my prostate was so full. So he wanted me masterbating more and said he would check me again in 2 weeks. He probably liked seeing my dick and ass and fingering me up there, so with him being a lot older then me, I felt a little violated because he had me do this in his office in the store. I'm sure he wasn't doing this just for his sexual pleasure, but I felt very uncomfortable having my boss with his fingers up my ass. lol

These urinals were popular in the 60's and 70's in schools and other public restrooms where large groups of people had to use the restroom at the same time. You whipped it out and faced each other like a circle jerk. lol The old MECCA arena where the Milwaukee Bucks played had these in all their men's restrooms. There was a circular bar around the base where you could flush it with your foot, which sprayed water in a fountain. These urinals were cool. You could get at least 6 adults around these urinals. Some places today have sinks in their restrooms in this similar style to wash your hands. The changing room at the beach at Menomonie Park in Oshkosh still has a wash sink in this style.
