BREAKTHROUGH: Scientists Discover a Vaccine for Herpes

Human trials are still a few years away, but the unconventional methods the researchers used to create immunity in mice could hold key to HIV and TB vaccines as well.

If I hear about another cure or vaccine for HIV I think I'n gonna scream. Haven't we had about one of these a week, for years? icon_rolleyes.gif

    I haven't seen any results yet. icon_sad.gif

MuchMoreThanMuscle saidJust another few years, everybody.

Let's all keep holding our breath.

    Again.....

    And again.....

    And...! Again....!

    All together now....!

That's the plan. If all the gays keep holding their breath then they'll suffocate and die. And then we won't won't have HIV anymore! Because it's a gay disease, right?

Sorry but vaccines and cures are hyped but take years to really come through. Also, it get mixed with political BS so it may even stop things or just delay forever. I bet they have cures for things we don't know about. Stopped by greed and politics icon_rolleyes.gif

I think that unlikely. There'd be whistle-blowers since you can't pay EVERYONE involved off. And even if you did pay everyone, many people have morals that would lead them to whistleblow.

Likelier is what everyone admits. The U.S. healthcare system and research funding is geared toward TREATING sick people as opposed to CURING sick people. Having a person daily take a blood pressure pill is more profit making than curing their disorder with one shot. So research is geared toward treatment, not cures. Sad system we haved. icon_cry.gif

Incorrect headline. Scientists created a new herpes vaccine, using a different strategy than has been tried before. There have been numerous herpes vaccines, but none of them has turned out to be particularly effective in human trials. It is too early to say whether this one will be more successful than the others, but it is at least different.

It is also not clear that the strategy would work for other kinds of viruses - it's pretty specific to herpes virus. Not relevant at all to TB.

HIV is a viral disease and TB is a bacterial disease. It is unclear that the same approach would work in both cases, but it would be wonderful if it did.

Some people prefer to be treated with pills, etc., than to be cured. Thus, some people maintain a sedentary life style and take blood pressure medication instead of having a better diet and getting good exercise instead.

you think anyone would choose to live with a disease if they had the option to get rid of it though?

@pazzy- people are incredibly short sighted. I have yet to meet a patient who doesn't know they should quit smoking. But most don't even want to hear about options to help them quit. People want cures that don't cost them any sacrifice. They want a skinny pill that let's them sit on the couch and eat nachos with extra cheese whiz.

@Svn- cures for diseases with known discreet causes are easy to find. TB for example. There is now a cure for hep C that works amazingly. Benign essential hypertension is still a mystery what actually causes it. Which makes it hard to cure. So we manage it instead. First lone treatment is hydrochlorothiazide which you can get at Walmart for $4. No one is getting rich off of that!
