What life stories do you find fascinating or inspiring?

    For me:

Vincent Van Gogh - Dutch painter. Struggled with mental illness, left his aristocratic family to live in poverty with the miners. Became an artist late in life and went on to produce some of the most striking paintings of all time.

Frida Kahlo - Mexican painter. Suffered lifelong debilitating injuries after a bus accident at 18, and began painting while recovering in bed. Had to deal with Diego Rivera's massive ego which is remarkable enough, but also created stunning self portraits, rubbed elbows with revolutionaries (Trotsky, etc) and became one herself.

Simon Rodia - Italian immigrant who spent over thirty years building the Watts Towers in LA from scraps he found in the street.

Madonna Ciccone - left her small town behind and came to New York when it was even more of a steaming shithole than it is today. After being raped, assaulted, robbed repeatedly, she still found the strength to stay and get involved in the local Downtown arts scene, where she befriended Basquiat and Warhol, and the rest is history.

James Baldwin - Born black, gay, and poor at a time when all three guaranteed one a life of obscurity. Went on to become a prominent author, intellectual, and civil rights activist.

Marie Antoinette - rich bitch who was a shitty Queen, but also a victim of a revolution that was going to happen either way. Went out with more courage than most. She was even courteous to her executioner. Can't say I would do the same.

Bill Gates - Ruthless muthafucka building up a software empire. Now using his wealth and power to do good around the globe.
