I've been climbing for about 10 years now and there are times when I do climb without rope (free solo). But when I do it is a climb I've done many times, know the chance of me falling is about the same when I climb a ladder, and the climb is never more then about two stories. Yes it is dangerous but knowing your skill level, how to minimize your fall damage, and a few other factors come into play.

That being said I believe climbers who do anything like this dude are absolutely crazy and irresponsible. They may not realize that they are a role model to someone and they are not only putting their life as risk any longer. It literally takes one little stupid mistake and you're falling. On a bit different note I know that is it easier to free solo a climb then it is to do a climb with a rope. You have much less to worry about, a lot less weight to carry, and more freedom as to where you go when you are climbing.

I know one too many climbers who have died free solo climbing and most of them were young like this guy sadly. Hopefully this guy will not add to the list of climbing accidents every year.
