Mandatory voting? Obama says it would be 'transformative'

IMO: It would be transformative...but I doubt that it could be done legally. Maybe instead of making it mandatory, give a small tax credit...like $20 for people that vote.

Or a $20 bill and a shot of whiskey... Oh, wait -- hasn't that already been done?

I don't know...maybe it could be legal. The government can force us to pay taxes. The government says we have to wear clothes, among other things. But I just kind of feel like we have a right to not vote. It is just sad that so many people take that up.

It's mandatory in other countries (Australia comes to mind). I think it would be transformative, too.

It is mandatory in Australia or you pay a fine. I am from the USA and I certainly do not find it a massive intrusion on my rights. The greatest right you have living in a democracy is the right to vote. People just amaze me at how apathetic they can be.

I've seen enough of Obama's "transformations" to know that nothing good can come from any of them.

There are currently 11 nations where voting is mandatory. There used to be close to twice that many 20 - 15 years ago. Research to find out what happened to them.

If being transformative is what makes this so appealing you'd have to agree making work mandatory would have a far wider transformative effect in the nation than voting.

Dear god no! It would be transformative but certainly not in a good way.

Everyone should vote as a matter of civic responsibility. Sadly, in The U.S., districts are so gerrymandered, it's difficult. E.g., where I live, there was next to zero dems on the ticket.

Why anyone would blow off their vote seems silly to me. Stupid.

If everyone voted it would help, but, a deep issue is how the districts are divvied up. In my case, I couldn't vote for anyone liberal. They weren't on the ticket.

As opposed to making it "mandatory" like in other nations (in Belgium, for example, you can be fined and jailed if you don't vote--though in practice this never happens), why can't we just stop the GOP from systematically disenfranchising the young, transient, minority, and poorer citizens.

Stop the silly Voter ID laws.
Stop the silly shutting down of polling places.
Stop the silly curbing of early voting.
Stop the silly canceling of Sunday voting (hurting blacks especially).

    Instead:

Ask for a person's name like most civilized places. Corroborate the address if anything seems fishy, and if they fail that test them make them fill out a provisional ballot.

Keep all existing, and hopefully ADD polling places.

Expand early voting and voting by mail.

    Keep Sunday voting open.

But hell will freeze over before the GOP stops systematically disenfranchising citizens of the U.S. 1984 indeed.

    +200,000.

Especially the mindless wonders who want the hapless Hillary ho elected president in 2016. They should be required to pay a $5000.00 poll tax in order to vote in the 2016 elections.

So lets see....Democrats don't want it mandatory to show ID when voting because it disenfranchises people but now they want to make it mandatory that everyone must vote? How surprising.

Well, I don't think anyone really wants to make it mandatory. I think everyone here is missing the point.

If we had a more involved electorate, the monied interests would have less influence over those who govern us.

Unfortunately, the media, where most voters get their information, is part of the monied interests. This leads us to an electorate who are not only apathetic, but ill-informed as well. A great situation for the status quo.

I think it's a lovely idea but it needs to be combined with switching it to a WEEKEND, when a lot of people are off work.
