NYT: Animals can play a primal, even magical, role in the lives of children. And while wild things may roam in the imagination, there is something unforgettable about the real-life bonds formed between young people and their pets. The NYT asked 10 artists to recall the special creatures that found their way into their young lives.

Didn't have one. From the day I was born, mom and dad were never able to afford a house of our own. We had to rent with government aid. Most of the homes we rented were owned by people who didn't like dogs. We lived in this one house for 12 years. The landlord was a bitch. One day, one of my older brothers came home with a golden retriever/Labrador puppy. We kept him only for 2-3 weeks before giving him off to a home-owning friend of my mom. One other time, a pack of dogs (all siblings) ran to our doorstep from a house down the street. My mother told the landlord about it, so she came down with a broom and started to hit the puppies. They were probably close to the end of weaning--yes, that young.

I had 2 golden retriever and 2 rabbits to company when I was a baby, then they had babies and we kept 1 each time so finally 3 babies. And also adopted a sheltie and my friends border collie got 8 babies is too many for her so I help her out with a baby girl.

Affenpinschers , we always had 2 running around the house , and we also had a 'Roo that my mum nursed back to life after finding him in our backyard . He became our dogs best friend , and even after being old enough to hop back in the bush , he always came at least once a day to visit us , during lunch or dinner time . icon_smile.gif

The white rat, hamster mix. The thing had a short tail and feet like a hamster, but the long body, fur, face, red eyes of a rat. Bugsy would bite like hamsters do. He loved the hamster wheel so much, he would never stop on it, day and night like a rat continues to move, especially at night, the thing never slept or calmed down, very high strung. He would keep me up at night with that wheel. He didn't live very long, I probably had him a little over a year, I came home from school one day and found his lifeless body in his plastic hamster cage. I screamed and cried, my parents and I put him in a small cardboard box and buried him in the back yard. icon_cry.gif
