Beer For Your Bad Back

Earlier today my husband said he saw something on TV that said drinking beer could reduce muscle swelling. He's been really suffering from severe back problems for a month now, he sees a pain management specialist this Tuesday, and is likely gonna have back surgery soon.

So I said OK, what beer do you want? And I ran right out and got some, which he's already had now. We rarely keep it in the house, unless we're expecting guests, or my own back is bothering me.

Almost 20 years ago I noticed a slight improvement in my own back pain after I had a beer. Which usually I only would have with a pizza. Then later I came across an article that claimed beer can sometimes help with back pain.

So every time my back began to act up, in addition to taking my meds, I tried some beer (of which I'm not terribly fond). It really seemed to help, better than the meds alone had.

I've told my husband this before, but he never listens to me. He'll listen to the TV, and every stranger he runs across, but rarely to me. And if this beer thing helps his back he'll credit the TV, not me, although I've been telling him the same thing for years. gerrrrrr... OK, just so long as he tries something that might help him, the credit isn't important.

So anyway, maybe something for you guys to look into, for the back or other pain. Or have you already heard about this, or experienced it yourself?

Creatine may help some too, has side effects itself but a lot less calories. Lite exercise and or loose a few pounds.

I find that planks (front and side) along with core stretches do more than just help my back pain...they keep it away completely.

The job I do keeps me sitting in an uncomfortable seat for several hours a day, and recently 7 days a week for the past few weeks. That always aggravates my herniated disks (L 4 and 5). If it weren't for daily planks, I'd already be bed-ridden again.

As for the beer, never heard of that for back pain; but Fireball sure does taste good after dinner. icon_biggrin.gif

Well, I suppose getting totally blitzed makes the pain go away, too. LOL!

But there seems to be a school of thought that beer can act as an analgesic, particularly for back pain. I just gave my husband another beer, in a nice frosted Pilsner glass. Just before bed, not pumping him with beer all day, see what he thinks. Like me he's not a big beer drinker, in fact he drinks very little alcohol at all, but we're gonna see.

And BTW, we saw the pain management doctor for the first time today, got some encouraging information, and are continuing with a plan of action. He'll likely be having epidural spinal injections within about a week, if his HMO concurs.
