Senate OKs budget amendment granting VA, Social Security benefits to married same-sex couples

"Republicans muscled a balanced-budget plan through the U.S. Senate early Friday that included an amendment granting Veteran’s Affairs and Social Security benefits to married same-sex couples.

Eleven GOP senators, many of whom face competitive re-election fights in 2016, supported the amendment offered by Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii)."

    ...

"Three GOP Senators who are expected to announce presidential bids fpr 2016 – Marco Rubio (Fla.), Rand Paul (Ky.), and Lindsey Graham (S.C.) – voted against granting benefits, as did early presidential contender Ted Cruz (Texas)."

Surprising but my guess is the military insisted. It really doesn't matter because it's all an exercise in futility. It and the reconciled version stand no chance of becoming anything other than a fundraising tool and time-wasting blathering on FOX. As usual, the Republicans are fundraising not governing. The inmates are running the asylum.

Nothing like a little left-handed compliments.

Stripped of that dicta, the FACT remains that these bennies wouldn't have been "muscled" into the budget w/o those GOP votes.

Why didn't democrats do this when they had control of both houses of Congress?

Speaking as a Democrat, it's because our legislators didn't have the balls.

Because they only had a filibuster-proof majority for 2 years. And the push was for Obamacare. Besides, we'll see if this makes it into a real budget. This one is nothing but theatre. It also kills Medicare, eliminates Obamacare and projects unrealistic revenues and cuts. Obviously Obama will veto it and they know it. And don't forget who told the VA and SS to honor these benefits in the first place.
