Hundreds of workers are paid around £500 a month and required to write at least 135 comments per day - or face immediate dismissal.

Now one former foot soldier has broken ranks to expose the Orwellian ‘troll factories’ where state-sponsored employees work 12-hour shifts posting pro-Putin propaganda on news and social media websites.

The structure is simple. Once a story has been published on a local news forum the troll army goes to work by dividing into teams of three: one plays the ‘villain’ criticising the authorities with the other two debate with him and support government officials. One of the pro-Kremlin pair needs to provide a graphic or image that fits in the context and the other posts a link to some content that supports his argument.

Not altogether surprising, but good to see someone else confirming the existence of state or party-paid trolls.

Thanks for the info. Wasn't FOXNews implicated in something like this years ago? Obviously a private party and not a state, but creepy nonetheless in general and all-the-more-so since they're considered "legitimate" news media.

I'm sure lots of private companies do it in order to hype their products, but it is not something one would expect from a reputable news outlet. Fox News, you say?

I wonder how many radical Right Wingers here on RJ are paid by Fox, or other specifically anti-gay organizations? We know it happens. To come here and disrupt a gay site, and demoralize gay men.

I really do wonder, and I have some prime candidates, who never contribute anything but gay hate. Don't you wonder, too? And beware those who "protest too much" as being the actual culprits.

Do I think the US government is paying an army of trolls to go into online forums and talk-up the the President? No, I don't.

actually it's on record that both the US and Britain both do just that

Is that like the plant the Bush White House placed in the WH Press Corps, to toss George W. flattering questions for which he was prepared? So even Bush, our most mentally challenged President since Reagan began sliding into Alzheimer's, could answer them?

The US Right Wing does this as a matter of routine. Why should RJ be immune from it? We've got nearly 400,000 registered members on a gay site, a very tempting target for Right Wing political & religious disruptors. To think we don't have them here would be naive in the extreme.

there was a story on Zerohedge.com about both the US and British electronic propaganda programs - they use bots to seed replies on both Facebook and Twitter

but propaganda is nothing new for dozens of countries whether in print, radio, TV or electronic

you actually believe it doesn't happen?

    @TJ85061

No, I don't believe it happens as you're saying, and as it does with other nations (e.g., China, Israel, Russia, etc.).

I do believe Obama's supporters via "Organizers for Action" and MoveOn.Org send me an email hitting me up for money every other day, literally. But fake/automatic FB and commentary posts? Nope. The gov't can't even get a decent website for the anticipated traffic level everyone saw coming (I love Obama, but that 'rollout' was a nightmare logistically).

I think you're giving them too much credit. I like Orwell too, but I don't see it here. I'm open to reviewing evidence, however scant, but I have seen none as of yet.

Very interesting, I wasn't familiar with that, thank you. Seems I've been a bit naive on this issue.

I can tell you if the gov't is "discussing" it a lot, there's already a black-ops program "beta" testing it. No specific evidence for my jump there other than history generally (for example, all nations spy on all other nations, it's par for the course, though publicly denied) and information I've gleaned from a close and confidential source in the US military/intelligence operations field.
