Working out taboo at my age?

Recently a straight friend of mine, in perfect health and in his late 40's decided to start body building, which made his wife concerned for his emotional well-being. Friends asked him "are you ok?"

The assumption seemed to be that at our mature age, no one with confidence or a healthy social life would bother with trying to get a six-pack, especially given the diminishing return on effort at our age, and how little it adds to the looks department. It's like a woman getting a boob job at age 60.

Most of the alpha males in our circle of friends also scoff at the idea of going to the gym; "pfft, rather spend the time biking/climbing/sailing/etc" is the common refrain. All they need to keep their women is with their charm and wit. Granted, the gays are more image-conscious, but even among my gay friends, I've noticed that the coolest guys or the guys I would prefer to date most, have no interest in working out beyond what it takes to be healthy.

Interested to hear thoughts on this apparently-common paradigm.

    WHAT a LOSER!!!!

A 40 year old fossil trying to get a six pack?!?!!?!?!?

First of all, a dinosaur THAT old has ZERO chance. It will NEVER happen.

Give it up Grandpa - its a joke. It's not even POSSIBLE to build any muscle at that age.

Sit back, sit quietly and just wait for a massive stroke.

It is ALWAYS best when You want to do something good for YOURSELF, that You listen to what EVERYONE ELSE has to say....

I don't think he's saying it's not possible, just possibly not worth the effort for someone with other things going on in his life. If you are already healthy and feel good about yourself, why work on looks... how much of an improvement can a six pack at age 50 really be anyway?

Most models on the covers of fitness mags are in their 40's and 50's.

    It's like this, junior...

If you want a sixpack, all you have to do is lose fat.

If you don't have a sixpack, it's because you're fat.

Being fat is not healthy. At any age.

How much difference does it make? A fuck of a lot, if you're an athlete.

If you're a couch potato, probably not so much.

    LOL

Let's not kid ourselves. Everyone can see the difference between an athletic body and a gym body. You'll hit a healthy BMI long before getting a six pack. This has nothing to do with health and everything to do with attracting guys. Straight people at OP's age don't care about these things as they're already partnered and enjoy stronger bonds than just physical. And to that point, in college, the guy in my class who got the most pussy had skinny-guy flabs, with nothing more than a hot personality and face.

but you gotta take into account that straight people actually get the chance to mature so to speak in terms of love, dating and relationships. gay people have been systemically discriminated and are basically shamed in society where they haven't been able to express themselves that way where they can mature like how straight people have. maybe in how many years from now where being gay is as normal as being straight, we might actually get to see ourselves besides sex objects and look at our potential partners in terms of dealing with the long term.

plus women don't see men the same way men see themselves though. they're attracted to men in different aspects compared to the way we are.

When you actually have a date with ANYONE other than a plastic sheep THAN MAYBE speak up.

Until then...just sit in the basement.

What would " you " know about any of this?

Your alpha male friends are slobs. In the straight world, once a dude marries a chick and impregnates her, he's got her locked down. She's not going anywhere. As long as the dude continues to bring home the paycheck and provides for the family, he can look like jabba the hut. Go to a mall or some other public venue. Do some people watching and you'll see what I mean.

Anyways, back on topic.. I don't think there's any sort of diminishing returns for working out in the later years. It's a necessity that many people don't realize. As you get older, you lose muscle mass and bone density. Weight training and other physical activities helps slow down the loss. You don't have to aspire to be a competitive bodybuilder, but you should hit the gym regularly.

Not that your FABULOUS stories of college boy sex aren't scintillating

A physical body and a true bond have NOTHING to do with one another.

But thanks for clearing THAT up.

Hope you get to one day experience either or both.

    Even you deserve that much.

Resistance training is more important as you age. (Too lazy to provide references from my phone. Google it. ). Other than that, I kind of agree that going outside and doing sports is better than spending time and money in a box.

Yep. There are better and more enjoyable ways to keep yourself healthy and fit, instead of eating tons of proteins, steroids and food. Here fit doesn't imply six packs or bulging biceps. I do spend time inside the box like so many gay men out there, but only to have bigger dating pool.

It's never too late to start working out. It's better to be active than to do nothing and there is no expiration date on when you can start.

Why does it matter what other people think? Do what you find is most enjoyable. For some, that's doing sports. For others it's working out in the gym. We're our own individual, do what's best for you not what's best for somebody else.

Here's a fact. I've watched my father's muscle mass waste away in his older years. I started working out at the age of 65 to prevent that happening to me, and even at my age, I come home from the gym feeling energized with a feeling of accomplishment. Use it or lose it, at any age.

It's about health, looking good, and pleasure. Sure, there are other ways to achieve these goals, but over 40, none better. Running? Terrible for ankles and knees (and I'm not so sure the heart loves it). Basketball? Maybe but mostly lower body and cardio (and that assumes you can find a regular game). Swimming? Sure. Golf? No way. Tennis? Sure but again, ankles and knees and elbows better be great. So really, the gym is the best for overall physical well-being and energy. What guy wouldn't want that? If someone wants to start getting old physically, well, that's his business. But for anyone to advocate for poor health, that's just rationalizing their own laziness.

My brother was always an athlete. A couple of years ago he divorced and married a heavy woman. (I don't want to imagine the sex.) Since then, he's quit exercising and gotten heavy himself. Says he just decided to enjoy food. Fine. But I enjoy good food and manage to stay in decent shape.

Fat people surround themselves with fat people. And don't want to see healthy people in their group.

Plus, I just enjoy the gym.
