Too bad the Guardian didn't show any pics of illegal immigrants, a BIG part of these problems, doing what they do best: exporting their problems elsewhere in defiance of the law and recreating the messes they left behind.

Speak up Sierra Club, EarthJustice, and EarthFirst! I can't hear you!

That's why I don't give money to foreign aid organizations. The population explosion is occurring in the third world. If we stop feeding them, clothing them, medicating them their numbers will reduce.

Why the guilt trip, metta. We're gay men; we are hardly responsible for overpopulating the world.

This type of mentality sickens me.

It's really sobering. I didn't think they were still clear-cutting in BC.

Humans only seem to care about their own species. Everyone thinks it's sick to state that humans need to stop breeding, yet all the primates and other intelligent mammals are being choked out. There's no diversity, just desperate and hungry humans shitting where we nest.... I guess the status quo of only caring for our own species will get us to a better place in heaven??? icon_cry.gif

    Undercoverman I hope you're joking.
Because otherwise if you're not you're very either misguided, heartless, or both.
Educating and improving the financial well being of women in the developing world decreases the fertility rate drastically. As does lowering the child mortality rate. If you know that your kids have a 99% chance of surviving to adulthood you don't need to have 7! Keeping young women in school delays when they have their first child and ensures they are literate so they can access birth control!

You make it sound like you just need to educate the unwashed masses. Unfortunately, in most cases they'll sooner listen to their religious leaders who are against birth control, and go along with their traditions, rather than let some gay guy they've been told is an abomination tell them how to live. And that's just the people in Indiana!!!

An issue that has zero political traction. Our dumb fuck leaders think more the merrier ... more voters I guess. Maybe the California water shortage will change things. Gov. Jerry Brown just slapped a 25% reduction in water usage on the state but didn't mention a moratorium on unsustainable growth. The population has increased 700% since they built the now empty Hoover dam. The O word is as unspeakable as the N word.

You have to start with education. If a people can't read and write what choice do they have other than listening to any idiot in a robe standing in a pulpit???
Or do you want to just write off the 2 billion people in the world living in poverty?
And I'm not making this up, increasing female literacy and decreasing infant mortality leads to a decreasing fertility rate.
Maybe you don't realize it but you come across as self righteous and ignorant a lot of times. Even when you have a decent point to make you spew so much vitriol in the process you alienate even those who would otherwise agree.

I have read that the conservatives in power have allowed all sorts of environmental damage to Canada. Here is to hoping they lose power in this years elections.

it's true, most humans just breed like rats without any concern for the consequences, even of they can't feed their offspring

India, most of Asia, most of the Middle East and most of Africa come to mind - go figure

yeah it sounds harsh, but it's true and you all know it

Actually the reality is nothing like what you postulate. Have you ever been to these places you speak of? Talked to anyone from these places? Children are an asset who can help the family unit survive and earn income in many of these places so it actually makes financial sense to have more. Also if there is a high child mortality rate chances are a couple of your children will die before the age of 5. So having 4 or 5 is a safe bet to ensure you have some survive to adulthood.

You shouldn't talk shit about people when you have no idea what their lives are like They do the best they know how with the information they have available to them. Just like all of us.

I once pissed my brother off after he'd married his second wife with an existing child and they right away had another together. But when they had their third child, I said to them "you're over your limit."

I've been a zero population growth advocate for as far back as I remember. I first recall becoming aware of the problem as a little kid watching the numbers change on the population clock at the New York World's Fair in 1964. That image has never left me.

And for a while it seemed people were working on it in the 60s and 70s, but not so much from the 80s onward. In thinking back, I wonder if China's one child policy didn't silence that movement because people around the world became so outraged at that level of intrusion. The timing would be about right. And so the rest of the world just kept popping out babies.

Besides the tragedy of the destructive ramifications of overpopulating the planet with humans, it strikes at what I consider to be a defining characteristic of human, of that which separates us from the rest of the animal kingdom.

And that's our ability to be stewards of other species. What other creature on the planet would be capable of assuring that any particular species doesn't go extinct? Only we have that ability to protect their numbers. Only we seem unable to control our own.

And yet, you could still stand the entire population of the world on the footprint of the City of LA.

I think over-population is a red herring. We need to get better at distributing the world's wealth and become more efficient in using the resources we have.

I don't feel I am anymore entitled to a decent life than some person in sub-Saharan Africa, merely because of an accident of birth.

Some striking photographs of humanity`s so called progress', especially the images from Mexico City and British Columbia. In many ways they all remind me of the opening credits of 'Soylent Green'.
As said above, it`s not just population numbers, but one of consumption, one of the strongest of western ideologies; and now spreading to the rest of the world with a vengeance.
What`s so depressing is the relentless extermination of other living creatures, all the beauty and diversity of life, for our own convenience and gain; that we must have the world totally for ourselves; that we deserve it because we have the strength and cleverness to take it from them.

BC is a mess. Our Right Wing gov't, (they did a hostile takeover of our Liberal Party and all of them migrated there as their own Party went down in flames of corruption), is also allowing Nestle's to pump out millions of litres of water at...are you ready...$2.25 per million litres.

Then they sell a single litre (actually less) in a bottle for minimum 1.99. We also have massive numbers of light natural gas wells being drilled all over.

We're also removing our farmland protected designations in favour of sprawling shopping centres surrounded by clutches of condo and townhomes.

It's what happens when you park gov't in favour of Biz.
