    Interesting piece of gay rights history here. The entire discriminatory basis, especially in federal employment, is all based on fear, back then as it is today. After reading the letter from John Macy, it would appear the United States purposely and willfully treated our gay brothers and sisters like criminals. Not based on any real secular crime, but based upon a so called religious one. The last 3-4 years, the US has made up for its horrible treatment of us and gay marriage ruling by SCOTUS will seal that, but we must continue to full equality, especially in employment. This hateful letter from John Macy is very upsetting to read, we are who we are and after reading this, I cant imagine anyone wanting to choose to be gay in the last 50-60 years, born this way really does fit now and make much more sense. We are still here, new generations, still fighting. Hateful, brainwashing religion is more of a problem than I could have ever imagined. icon_confused.gif

    “Letter to Mattachine Society of Washington from John Macy, Chairman, United States Civil Service Commission

    Mattachine Society

    The Mattachine Society, founded in 1950, was one of the earliest homophile (gay rights) organizations in the United States, probably second only to Chicago's Society for Human Rights. Harry Hay and a group of Los Angeles male friends formed the group to protect and improve the rights of gay men. Because of concerns for secrecy and the founders' left-wing ideology, they adopted the cell organization being used by the Communist Party of the United States (CPUSA). In the anti-Communist atmosphere of the 1950s, the Society's growing membership replaced the group's early Communist model with a more traditional ameliorative civil rights leadership style and programme. Then, as branches formed in other cities, the Society splintered in regional groups by 1961.

    The primary goals of the society were to
    1."Unify homosexuals isolated from their own kind";
    2."Educate homosexuals and heterosexuals toward an ethical homosexual culture paralleling the cultures of the Negro, Mexican and Jewish peoples";
    3."Lead the more socially conscious homosexual to provide leadership to the whole mass of social variants"; and
    4."Assist gays who are victimized daily as a result of oppression

    How is religion involved? Maybe I missed some reference to religion in the article?

    Where do you think the "historically been considered" comes from? Lawrence v. Texas, 539 U.S. 558 (2003) is a landmark decision by the United States Supreme Court. In the 6–3 ruling the Court struck down the sodomy law in Texas and, by extension, invalidated sodomy laws in 13 other states, making same-sex sexual activity legal in every U.S. state and territory. The Court overturned its previous ruling on the same issue in the 1986 case Bowers v. Hardwick, where it upheld a challenged Georgia statute and did not find a constitutional protection of sexual privacy.

    Up until the court stepped in, historically biblical law applied. “Homosexual conduct, including that between consenting adults in private,” the Commission added, “is a crime in every jurisdiction, except under specified conditions, in Illinois.”

    The Government at that time could not explain why homosexual conduct was a crime, other than sighting bible passages? And who or what wants to control and is OCD obsessed with everyone's sex? From history, we already know what the churches influence was and still is in government.

    Crime against nature

    Sexual practices that have historically been considered to be "crimes against nature" include anal sex[2] and bestiality
