NYT: Playing nine holes while riding in a cart does not provide much of a workout, though the game can improve your balance and physical confidence.

Why are these studies limited to 9 holes? 18 are more typical. Those last holes can be very fatiguing for an older man like me, golf cart or not. And when you swing the club (other than putting) you do exert yourself. It's just not a sustained aerobic effort.

It's a great back exercise, you can achieve really nice trunk rotation.

Just look at the physiques of most golfers. That should answer the question.

No gay man wants enlarged obliques! No wonder golfers look thick around the middle. icon_razz.gif

Exercise or not, golf is a fantastic way to relieve stress. There's something sensual about being outside on a quiet day and using a stick to wack a ball as far as you can. I find it's the most effective way to relieve stress - more than pumping iron icon_wink.gif

Golf is the most retarded sport ever invented. The biggest reason I hate it is because it destroys acres of land for each golf course. And add to that the toxic chemicals needed to keep the grass that unnatural color all year long and it's an environmentalist's nightmare. Groundskeepers at golf clubs, and golfers themselves suffer from a long list of health problems related to landscapers' toxic chemicals, the most common being non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Working as a Golf Course Superintendent has been found to significantly increase the risk of dying of four cancer types including - brain cancer, lymphoma, prostate and large intestine cancer. Brain cancer and lymphoma rates for the golf course superintendents occurs at over twice the national average. Prostate cancer is nearly 3 times the national average and large intestinal cancer is almost twice the national average.

Oh, and you don't have to work on a golf course to die from it. Living closer than 2600 feet to a golf course increases your chance of brain cancer by twice. An astounding 6.7 fold increased risk was found for the brain cancer type known as astrocytoma for people living within 2600 feet from a golf course.

    So......fuck golf! icon_mad.gif
