I had a duathlon yesterday morning and decided to go on a nice recovery ride in Neenah/Menasha last night and I crossed the Trestle Trail bridge at 6:42 pm last night, just moments before all the shooting and bloodshed, which killed 4 people, including 2 children. It has left these 2 communities stunned because nothing like this has ever happened around here before. It was really warm and a beautiful evening and so the trestle trail was really crowded last night with people fishing, walking, and riding their bikes.

Wow that's horrible, I'm sorry to hear. Violence is always disturbing and unfortunate, but all the more so when innocent bystanders are implicated.

I know there are privacy rules and ethics governing this at this point, but I'd like to see a write-up on each of the victims--insofar that their family wishes for it--so we can hear about and focus on the positive as well.

My condolences to those lost icon_cry.gif

PS, @OP I'm glad you weren't hurt and didn't have to physically see this tragedy first hand.

Because the weather was so nice this weekend and because the National Bike Challenge began this weekend, the trail was very crowded with bikers and people just out enjoying a beautiful warm spring day. The bridge is an old train trestle bridge over Little Lake Butte Mort and a few years ago was converted to a beautiful pedestrian/bike bridge ,which is almost a mile long and has benches and places to fish off it and gets almost 1,000 people walking and biking across every day and on the west side of the bridge there is Fritsch Park with a boat launch and playground area. Many ride this trail over the lake every day as a commuter route on their way to work because it links the city of Menasha with the city of Neenah and then connects with the Friendship Trail and also to the CB trail linking to West Neenah and to the airport in Appleton. We have a pretty nice infrastructure in the Fox Cities for people to safely get around the entire Fox Cities area by bike, as long as someone doesn't crack and start randomly shooting people. I have lived in this area my whole life and nobody has ever seen anything like this before.

If you like to bike, this is bike heaven here in the Fox Cities. It is really great with bike lanes, trails, etc. We came in 1st place last year in the National Bike Challenge because people love to bike here and with the warm weather this weekend, the trails were really crowded. I had just crossed about 15 minutes before the shootings at 7 pm last night.

They announced this morning that the trail will be closed all day today. My friend rides this trail to work every day and had to take a different route this morning. Authorities are talking to his ex fiancé, who broke off the engagement which led to this random shooting of innocent bystanders. He was a student at UW Oshkosh and had enlisted in the armed forces.

The victims have been identified. 1 of those injured, died this morning at the hospital--a total of 4 people, including
    the shooter are dead.

Violence like this has never occurred here before. Schools have just recently locked their doors with the wave of school shootings in the rest of the country. Otherwise, even none of the schools here even locked their doors when school is in session. It's been a very safe place here, but things are beginning to change here as well.

Some new information has come out. After interviewing witnesses of the shootings they said the shooter was at the pavilion on the bridge for at least 45 minutes before he started shooting. That means when I crossed the bridge on my bike that evening, he was already there and could have shot me on my bike. I would have passed by him at less then 10 feet away. The11 year old girl, the mom, the dad, and another guy were all shot at close range. All died except the mom who is still in the hospital. After being shot 3 times, she managed to get her 2 younger children off the bridge. Last night I biked across the bridge for the first time after the shooting and there was a prayer service on the bridge and they said there were at least 750 people on the bridge. I hope they built the bridge to handle the weight of that many people because it would be tragic , if the bridge collapsed now. The dad was shot 7 times and it was reported by witnesses that his last words were, "Forgive the shooter." What a remarkable confession of faith!
