Chuck knocked it out of the ballpark.
Christians in the US are blaming everyone and I do mean EVERYONE for the problems they've created for themselves. They think like this...
"Times are changing, people are changing, societies are changing, we need to have a revival of religion back to its fundamental roots and stop all this change. HUH? YOU WANT US TO CHANGE TO KEEP UP WITH EVERYONE ELSE? GO FUCK YOUR SINFUL SELF!!!! JESUS WILL KILL YOU FOR SAYING THAT!!!"
THAT is the exact thinking that led to the spread of Wahhabism in the 18th century that dominates the Arabian peninsula and all the rest of Sunni Islam today.
Now in the US we have our own version of Taliban so entrenched in their backwards facing fundamentalism they are talking about revolution, war and violence to get their way over an inconsequential percentage of the population that wants to marry people of the same sex... THAT in itself shows exactly how fucked up their priorities are.
Even though I have no real admiration for Christianity or any other major religion, I concede religion has its place in society; that place is to give the intellectually challenged a perpetual tutorial in the difference between right and wrong. Fundamentalism of any sort does not do this. In fact all forms of fundamentalism teach that the means (any means) justify the ends. Lie, cheat, kill, destroy, enslave minds to lead people back to worshipping a nonexistent deity who will give eternal life to those who lie, cheat, kill and enslave minds in the name of a nonexistent deity.
NOTE: this is a statement about religion, not politics and I appreciate it if we can discuss religion on this thread without injecting politics into it. In all of history the worst injustices have been when religion forced itself onto politics. Strangely enough more times than not, when politics have forced itself on religion the end result has been beneficial to the society and the people.
