So my friend invited me to go to International Mister Leather. The problem is that 1) I am not really a big leather guy. And 2) I don't really want to partake in sexual activities. Is it possible to go and still have fun?

Sorry, I know this sounds kind of stupid. I want to go for the experience. But I guess I'm apprehensive.

I've done photography for a couple leather bars, and was never into some of sexual things many of them enjoy. It was really fun and I'd do it again in a heartbeat if asked.

I've been several times and I would say that at least half the guys there are not really hardcore into leather and just go for the party and to experience something kinky and different. Your experience there can be whatever you want it to be. There is no pressure to participate in sexual activities, though with all the sexual energy there you might change your mind. icon_twisted.gif

Even if it doesn't end up being your thing, Chicago is a great city to visit and you can find a lot of things to do outside the host hotel. But go; check out the leather market, have a drink with other guys in gear in the hotel lobby, go to one of the big dance parties if that's your thing. You'll have a good time.

Go for the experience, and enjoy the eye candy. Do not participate in the sexual stuff. But, you know, watch if you must.

I am in a lucky place,
I live about 4 blocks from the Hotel where IML is held,
be it the Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott or this year the Congress
I am not a leather guy, but it is fun to hang out at the bar
along with 100's of other guys, doesn't cost anything,
neither does the friday night party, or the dog pound.
The leather mart costs $10 for the entire time,
    not to be missed,
lots of sights to say the least,
no pressure to do anything sexual.
it is actually more silly and entertaining than erotic.
and like others have said, Chicago is a fabulous city.
    just hope for good weather
    and have fun

I can't decide what turns me off more......a guy dressed in drag or a guy dressed in that black leather shit. It's nothing but a masculinity prop. All those guys are usually queens once they open their mouths but they walk around postering like macho studs. So fake and so gross. icon_rolleyes.gif

But if you go, have some fun with it. Buy a bag of rubber cockroaches and watch the leather "studs" come out of their macho act real quick. icon_lol.gif

And once again someone thinks that their opinion supersedes everyone else's. There're only two constants in the universe: Death, and guys who put 18-wheeler exhaust stacks on diesel pickup trucks are douches. Everything else is analogue.

The wildest bar that I have ever been to was actually a straight bar called Club Hell. It was in Hollywood. I had a friend that was helping with a latex fashion show. I'm glad that I went. I saw some crazy stuff that I would not have otherwise ever seen.

actually, this is the fashion show that I saw.

I was amazed at the time and money people put into their outfits. And I don't mean just the fashion show. Many of the people there were wearing outlandish outfits that had to have taken many hours to put together. I saw people being pierced, tattooed, spanked, put on stretcher things.....

I wasn't really dressed appropriately for that club but people didn't care. I don't have any latex or leather clothes. Honestly, I find the whole leather thing to be a little humorous.

If you want to go for the experience, then go! If you feel pressured to do something you don't want to do, or if you just feel so awkward that it's not fun for you, then leave.

I had never been to a circuit party, so I went to the Black Party once year. Circuit parties are not for me. Now I know. One night, 45 minutes in (and one friggin' expensive ticket, but not outside my budget) is all it took. If I had never gone, I would always wonder if I was missing out on something.

Adventure is going into something not knowing exactly what the outcome will be. It's okay to be adventurous and prepared. One way or another, you're going to learn something.

I agree. Many years ago I went to the White Party in Palm Springs a couple of times with friends...it was fun...I saw crazy stuff...but I really don't have any interest in going again. Oh gesh...that brings back memories....I didn't do anything crazy...but crazy stuff was happening all around me.

    MuchMoreThanMuscle said

IML is really all about overindulgence and nurturing one's hedonistic sexual exploits/proclivities. Take that into consideration along with all the drugs and you have a fairly toxic environment. People would come up and talk to me and naively I thought they were being social. But when you make it clear you're not interested in sex they unabashedly drop you like a hot potato and move on to someone else. I've even had guys verbally attack me in public over trivial, innocuous misunderstandings. Dang, I have way too many lousy personal stories regarding IML. It's truly pathetic.

I don't think I can say that I've ever met a more concentrated group of self-gratifying assholes than when I went to the last two IML events (post-meth).

I have never been to any of these circuit parties or special fetish events, but I always had the kind of impression you wrote above. I was curious though, but I doubt I would be attending any of these events in near future.

I go some years. I like some aspects of it, others not so much. This year I'll go just for Friday night (I like the rubber and gear fetish parties), and a quick visit to the leather market on Saturday. If anyone wants to meet up for a drink, please PM me.
