But his community also deserves to know. If Makela made even one LGBT kid at St. John’s “Christ-based” elementary school, their parents, friends, family or anyone who ever stepped foot in the church feel like being true to yourself is shameful (and it seems all too likely that he did), then we’re glad to share his hypocrisy with the world.
I can see two valid reasons for ever outing. If a hypocrite is damaging community, then by outing stop him. Perfectly valid.
The second reason would be to help heal damage done by the authoritative hypocrite. For the outing to be applied in earnest, not in vindictiveness which wouldn't be healing, motivation must be not merely informing community to punish the guy but to raise consciousness, to light the world with awareness, to bring about understanding, especially for those who took a pastor's words to heart or those hurt by a legislator's laws.
So outing ought to be about stopping further damage and repairing damage done. Not about creating more damage. There's already enough pain in the world.
