It depends on how you define "conservative". A true conservative is definitely not the narrow minded bible thumping screwballs and the warmongering neocons who have hijacked and contaminated conservatism. A real conservative is a person who wants smaller government, greater freedom, and more individualism. Nebraska is more a populist, libertarian, conservative state unlike the sunbelt theocracies like Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Nebraska is very strange in this way. Full of bible thumping social conservatives to be sure, but most are too busy being productive and/or constructive to waste resources on the endless political pursuit of spite.

A while ago somebody posted about why republicans were "so angry", and my unpopular response was based on having grown up in Nebraska: in my experience Nebraskan conservatives often genuinely believe that their conservative politics are defensive, and in a way there is some sincerity to their claims that if you leave them alone they'll leave you alone.

This is a sadly outmoded attitude in today's age of global and hypercynical politics, but artifacts like this do not surprise me at all.

I think this is a good thing. The death penalty should had been done away with years ago. It's a shame that the US is the only Western nation that still has it. It's kind of embarrassing.
This latest repeal is a step in the right direction, but too late for the 1,000 plus people who have already been executed sine the death penalty was reinstated in 1976.

I know it's shocking the US still has the death penalty but this is a step in the right direction!
