The New Civil Rights MovementBryce Goodson, the Senior Class President at Providence, a private Christian school [Jacksonville, Florida], came out on Twitter on Sunday, May 17:

Bryce, on TwitterHappy to finally be able to tell everyone: I'm gay

The New Civil Rights MovementOn Monday, Goodson says a Providence teacher let him know the school board thought it would be "unwise" for him to attend the awards ceremony for the school's 2015 musical production of "Little Women." In response, Goodson started an online petition to raise awareness for his fellow students.

"The [student] handbook outlines 'social exclusion or isolation' as a form of bullying," Goodson's petition smartly points out. "I make this petition in hopes of gathering support and showing Providence how poorly they handled the situation. The Board did not emulate the love that Christians are supposed to stand for."

His petition, titled "Love Your Neighbor," has received nearly 800 signatures as of this writing. "I want to make anyone else at Providence who is gay or questioning feel at least somewhat more confident in who they are," Goodson explained, adding, "this action was taken after I had graduated from Providence, and therefore the school had no right in interceding in my actions."

The New Civil Rights MovementWJXT also spoke with Ed Goodson, Bryce's father, who said he was disappointed in the school. "We’ve had students there, for two kids, for 12 years," he said. "(We’re) quite surprised with their behavior on the issue.”

"A private Christian school," is all I have to read to make me sigh and roll my eyes (figuratively). It's a religion that admonishes homosexuality within its holy book. After two millennia, you'd think it wouldn't come as a surprise. Okay, snarky mode disabled.

    It's a private Christian school:

Private: Not public, they can set boundaries on students, and take action how they see fit in ways public schools can't.

Christian: Setting aside the recent evolution of widespread 'liberal Christianity' that's sprung up recently (within past hundred years), the religion's inherent doctrine says homosexuality (whether thought or action) is a sin. It's not surprising that the leaders of this Private organization would take action based on that.

School: They're teaching students, but they're also promoting an ideology, and a theology. It would have been contradictory to their religion if they didn't do what they did, and from their view, would have set a bad precedent by allowing someone to openly defy, in public, before their other students, what their religion says about a particular issue. Even just accepting a reward for something unrelated, would be seen as accommodating.

I'm on Bryce's side, but honestly, to me it seems like he and his parents have been living in a well of ignorance--they don't realize how internally fragmented the whole of society is when it comes to their religion. They're looking at the world from an internal perspective, without the ability to step outside the religious boundaries and see how many different denominations or interpretations there are. So when their more modern, liberal perspective is challenged by a fundamentalist, literal perspective, it comes as a surprise to them.

Anywho, typed way more than I probably should have, but oh well.

Kudos to this kid for standing up to the conservative bigots and publicly shaming them. He was absolutely right to call it bullying. They come off looking like to slime they are.
The more kids stand up to the school's administration, I predict they will suddenly have a change of heart on "God's will" when they realize their school's budget will be negatively impacted.
