I'm liberal, but I find this article a little too specious and click-bait-ish.
(1). The police KNEW the man had a gun since he shot and opened fire on the police while running in the public.
(2). The man had a 9 year old boy hostage. The police were able to get the boy out at some point, but it shows the man was scum (any person who, for longer than a few seconds, takes a hostage is a different breed. Many criminals will tell children and women to runaway. Taking a little boy as hostage is despicable even by criminal standards).
(3). The SWAT team only bombed the house after the negotiations failed. It wasn't a hair-trigger overreaction. It was necessary. They can't stay there until the man runs out of food in two months.
I don't find this police response wrong in any regard.
