When I had to tie my school tie beginning around the 3rd grade (until then I had used a clip-on) my Father taught me how to tie like he did.

But it sucked. It was a ratty little knot, and wouldn't untie when you removed it. So I stood in front of the mirror for about an hour, all of 8 years old, and experimented.

I think what I came up with is a Double Windsor, the same knot I use to this day. Perfectly symetrical, and releases completelly when you untie it.

In my teens I did the same with a bow tie. I ignored the confusing pictured instructions they have, I figured it's the same knot as when I tie my shoe, only you keep the fabric flat. I also use that solution to this day.
