"The average American woman weighs 166.2 pounds, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As reddit recently pointed out, that's almost exactly as much as the average American man weighed in the early 1960s."

"Men, you're not looking too hot in this scenario either. Over the same time period you gained nearly 30 pounds, from 166.3 in the 60s to 195.5 today. Doing the same comparison as above, today's American man weighs almost as much as 1.5 American women from the 1960s. At 195.5 pounds, put five American guys in a room and you've gathered roughly half a ton of manhood."

My parents always say that even fit people are bigger. My parents were both college athletes. My mom always weighed under 140 and my dad at his biggest for college football was about 195.

My sister and I played college sports. My sister as a college bball player weighs 155 of muscle and at my biggest, I was 245-250 of muscle. But we also eat like horses.

    Hormonally and chemically altered food
    Automation/Digital life style
Shaming of manual labor/blue collar jobs
Cheap delicious bad food with long shelf lives
Expensive healthy food that spoils very quickly
    Longer work hours

But most of all, mass advertisement for sugary foods and drinks, combined with false information about what's healthy and what's not. My biggest peeve with unhealthy foods is when they are marketed as being "healthier," as in, healthier than some stuff but not really healthy. Fat people buy that shit up without doing their own research into what's healthy and what's not.

You have got to remember that in 1960 practically everyone over the age of 12 smoked cigarettes. Nicotine is a powerful appetite suppressant.

Many people had sedentary jobs by the 1960s. Lets face it punching keys on an old IBM electric typewriter is not much different than a modern laptop computer. Coke, Pepsi, Doctor Pepper (remember 10, 2 and 4 ) KFC, Arbys, and McDonalds were all well established back then. Plenty of junk food was on the shelves too. Twinkies were invented in 1930!

The main difference was that back in 1960 Cigarettes were EVERYWHERE! Cars came fully equipped with a cigarette lighter and an ash tray in the dash. Back then even doctors were advertising cigarettes. This was years before the Surgeon general started warning people about the dangers of tobacco use, and warning didn't appear on cigarette packs until circa 1970.

Hell, even in the early 90s when I was in High School the school still had a smoking area FOR STUDENTS!!!, and there were cigarette vending machines in the lobby. IMO the war on tobacco is a direct cause of the obesity epidemic. If you go to Europe you won't see too many fat people but you WILL see plenty of people smoking cigarettes.

I am not trying to advocate tobacco use just pointing out facts!

Hopefully the authors of this study were not paid. There are so many studies with obvious results. Yes, everyone knows people are getting fatter and eating bad food.

Rule of scientific research: Never EVER assume an answer as fact even when it seems painfully obvious. Let the studies figure it out. And the answers can't be that obvious when the posters are proposing different explanations - all which seem obvious but still could be wrong or right for all we know until SCIENCE (not me; not you; not us; not our perceptions; but objective measures of reality) reveals it.

The perfect example of why we overpay for bogus research. Don't get me wrong, I am all about trying to find a cure for diseases, etc. We can pay a researcher to feed people Ben & Jerry's all day and that researcher will reach the inevitable conclusion that eating Ben & Jerry's all day makes you fat. But that is a waste of money.

    Similar trend here.
You notice on the films from the 1960s or earlier, especially at swimming pools or the beach where people wear little, how much skinnier people were then.
The trend has crept up on us and we gradually get use to this growing weight without thinking about it. Only with the passage of fifty years does it seem so stark.

    +1

My first "man crush" was Bruce Lee...just because he was so fucking ripped. Now seeing a guy with that definition is extremely rare.

With the exception of a few guys who live in urban areas, the majority of people with decent physiques are near-or-under the age of 18 (thank god some invisible deity I live in an urban area). And we wonder why pedophilia is such a problem.

Mad props to the guys in my age bracket who've taken the plunge to aspire for a healthier (and consequently, better-looking) lifestyle. icon_wink.gif

It's easy to see that there's a growing obesity epidemic out there. Overweight is the new average weight.

I agree with the cigarette theory 100%. All my smoker friends are skin and bone, or they lose weight rapidly.

Next is cocaine and meth that offers similar effects. I'm scared of skinny bitches nowadays. Them hoes be ready to light a cigarette at any moment
