If they lost any other body parts they could get a free tank of gas.

Usually they are, but some sharks actually like the taste of human flesh/blood. There are plenty of studies and documentaries you can access to find out which sharks you can safely swim with, and which sharks to stay clear of.

I post that as an adrenaline junkie who has been hurt numerous times, and always find humor in my injuries. icon_wink.gif

MuchMoreThanMuscle saidThese aren't injuries. These are bodily disfiguring traumas and this happened to children that will forever be effected by what happened.

I can't even imagine to think what the pain must have been like. To have your own limp severed off by the jaws of a shark. What fucking a nightmare.

And you guys think it's appropriate for jokes? What if this happened to you, or your loved ones?

    This just isn't funny.
Personally I would figure out a way to find humor in it even if it happened to me.

My brain is just wired that way. I could lose both arms and both legs, and somehow figure out a way to find humor in it, enjoy life, and call myself a human slug or something.

Just ask anyone who's known me for any significant length of time - particularly through some of my bad times. Yeah I'll bitch and moan and groan and complain, but eventually figure out a way to twist things around to a positive note and find humor in it.

So yes, I think jokes are totally appropriate, because laughter is the best way to turn a negative experience into a positive outcome. icon_wink.gif

I'm reading the attacks were 1 hour, and 2 miles apart. If correct, then the word might not have reached the beach where the boy was.

Did you ever stop to think that maybe if a shark were to sever my "limp" then next time I could swim faster.icon_idea.gif

sorry I am not apologizing - I am completely on the shark's side here
the sea is the sharks home ... and no its not funny ..it's terrible, unless you are the shark in which case it is a happy meal
it is a needless stupid accident that should never happen - and if it somehow happened to a person I knew ..I would say to their face , once the boo hooing had stopped ...""why the fuck did you go swiming about in the sea where there aren't shark nets , life guards etc ..?? """
no sympathy for stupidity - sorry
I come from south africa and every summer holiday we went to a place called Umhlanga a holiday town on the Indian Ocean ( really hot life guards) , where there are a ton of sharks ... and every kid knows all the rules of the sea ...and shark attacks are virtually unheard of

And this is exactly why I don't fuck with the ocean...I don't care how far or close to shore you are, you never know what's watching you underneath.

It's really sad. A twelve year old girl was only waist deep in the water. So she was probably only two to two and a half feet deep in the water. Most people would assume that is a safe depth to swim in.

The scary part is that it seems that sharks are getting closer and closer to the shore. I was speaking to someone the other day who was telling me that he and his friends saw a lot of hammerheads at OBX here in North Carolina a while ago while fishing...I'm not surprised by the attacks, but rather shocked that it took so long for them to happen.

I wonder if sharks are slowly moving inward toward coastal areas because food for them is becoming scarce. A shark swimming in less than three feet deep water is just not normal behavior.

That's part of it, but sharks are also becoming more numerous again. Their protection is showing results, and side effects. Like with wolves who are also becoming a nuisance in some parts of the country again.

I wouldn't expect sympathy from you. Because sympathy is a more advanced concept than showing respect for someone else's tragedy; which you evidently don't have.

Well hunting sharks relentlessly will not bring back any "balance".. we need to respect nature- we are the ones causing havoc to this planet.
There should have been nets where the attack happened.
There was a similar attack in Florida last year.

Nice try. Referring to someone's lost limbs as "mmmy that was tasty" or a McDonald's "happy meal" is just terrible.

    seriously , get over yourself

    43-shark-memes-shark-week--large-msg-131

you know what is terrible ? 100 million sharks being killed each year....

MuchMoreThanMuscle saidOh I see, you lament more for the death of an animal yet inappropriately make jokes when a human suffers because one.

Maybe if those sharks only lost a dorsal or tail fin, disabling their ability to swim/survive, you'd refer to the loss as a McDonald's "happy meal"?

    "Mym, tasty" perhaps?

And unless you're a vegan who doesn't touch any form of meat one of those dead sharks probably wound up on your dinner plate.

    your small mindedness is baffling

it is not AN animal ... it is one hundred million animals every year ... butchered in their own home

it is a stupid 100 % avoidable accident that should never have happened - I will never be attacked by a shark it will never happen ...and a far far less tradjedy than what humans are doing to the sea ...the sea, the ocean ..this is the sharks home not ours whenever we go into the sea , we are the nuisance not the shark
this includes shallow waters and in south africa sharks have been spotted quite a few kilometers away from the ocean up river streams !

fun fact - these sharks are ONLY killed for their dorsal fins which is used to make shark fin soup ... it is the only part of a shark that is really edible

    0_e63bc_920379ec_orig.jpg

so yes the destruction of ocean animals is horrifying

    no I dont eat shark
