So, RJ men, what do we think? From my perspective it's useful to distinguish the concepts of identity (whatever you think you are, that's cool - live and be well) versus status (your subjective identity doesn't automatically gain you acceptance by the existing community that represents that identity as a member of that community). At least that's the way it works in Judaism as I understand it. But how that maps onto questions of race stumps me.

Race is genetic and cultural. Often times you have people who identify with another race culturally, even if they are of a different race genetically. Acceptance definitely isn't guaranteed and it often depends on the person, as well as the community they are seeking it from.

Look, genetically, we are all Africans. Europeans didn't sprout from the ground in Europe.

This has been all the talk here in town. I live here in Spokane where Rachel resides, and went to college where she teaches some classes, although, I never took any classes from her or saw her around campus because she wasn't there yet when I was in attendance. I don't care that she is passionate about African American history, suffrage, civil rights, but what bothers me and makes me mad, is if she lied about her race on applications (college, grants, jobs, etc.) and benefited from claiming to be African American when she truly wasn't.

I always try and approach things like this with an open mind. I've heard commentary ... and her own interviews.
From my perspective, she can certainly identify with, appreciate, embrace (whatever she does) feeling black and an appreciation of the black community and experience, but that doesn't "make her black".

"Racial identity" isn't the issue here, integrity is, and this woman has none, as her own parents noted in a recent interview. She sued Howard U. claiming she was discriminated against because she's white, but then - or should I say now? - claims to be black. She's nothing but another of the many frauds looking to make money off the affirmative action machine.

With the exception of the last 9 words, MGINSD nailed it.

She's very evasive. When questioned, all she'll say is, "I identify as black." Which essentially means, "I tell people I'm black." Or maybe "I tell myself I'm black."

I'd like to ask her exactly what it is about being black she identifies with.

    But I'm sure I wouldn't get a straight answer.

And by the way, who knew there were black people in Spokane?!?!? Wikipedia says 2.3% of the population is African American. I think that covers the Gonzaga basketball team, and not much more.

Rachel Dolezal, under siege for claiming to be black, says she's bisexual

Also relates to Caitlyn Jenner's feelings of isolation

And yet, Spokane actually has an annual MLK Day parade. And infamously, an MLK Parade Bomber.

Wouldn't it be dilish if Rachel had some connection? Ex boyfriend? Wait. I won't go there... Pure fantasy. As far as we know.

Race is only a perception thing vs. biological. If she individually is crazy, who cares. If someone wants to celebrate a culture without violence, let them.

I went to a Big College in a small town.I dated Black at one point and hanged around with other black friends. If we left Campus to the rich or red neck areas..I saw how they were treated ,the looks, the slights, the shocked look, because I was with them, ..this was late 80'S.I absolutely could identify, because I was treated the same, it didn't make me Black, but it sure made me Mad.
