Folks, this is an example of the psychology of extremists as documented in the study linked below. As the study states, extremists can be of any political persuasion, but those here, and quoted, represent far left extremists.
In their mind, almost everyone agrees with them, and when they see counter examples, they form a belief structure that supports their delusions. Specifically, they convince themselves that only a few can disagree with their viewpoint, and create the notion of, in terms here, socks to justify their beliefs. Even though no evidence exists, they convince themselves of their position even to the point of concocting evidence.
Much has been written about the psychology of extremism, and these cases would be interesting subjects.
