Extreme Embarrassment from Hacked App

Yesterday I was driving somewhere and two of my closest female coworkers texted me that my whatsapp account has been hacked.

I thought my account would probably send out some weird messages like one of those hacked emails I got with a link to buy something. No big deal. So I checked to see what got sent out and saw nothing. Just to be safe, I deleted my whatsapp account.

Later at work this morning, I found out from one of them (through text because she was off work today) that they got porn pics from my text and whatsapp. icon_eek.gificon_redface.gif

I used my Google Voice number for my whatsapp. So it could be that my Google Voice got hacked and it sent out text and porn pics.

The thing is I do not collect porn pics anywhere (neither on my phone nor my computer). So I have no idea what type of porn pics was sent out and how. It was just very awkward and embarrassing for me because they might think that I store these pics on my phone. They might even consider it sexual harassment. icon_sad.gif If it's gay porn pics that were sent out, then it's even worse. And I dare not ask them the details of what type of porn pics they were.

I have no idea who else received them beside those two of my female coworkers. I was just so embarrassed today even after I told them I had no idea and I have no such pics on my phone. icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

Did this type of thing ever happen to anyone? How would you guys handle it?

The E-mail account of a guy I know pretty well got hacked a year ago or so. The hackers started sending all kinds of porn, none of it related to the guy whose account was hacked. So, everyone just shrugged with their shoulders and moved on.

Do not make it an issue. Tell everybody, you got hacked, and that the material that may be distributed has nothing to do with you.

Its obvious you didn't mean to send the pics, no matter what kind, so no reason to be embarrased or to worry about this. Shrugg it off.

Are you sure your female coworkers aren't pranking you? Have you seen evidence of this alleged hack?

I know these two coworkers and they wouldn't joke about something like this. One of them was on vacation in Hawaii with her family, and she called me immediately, but I couldn't pick up as I was driving.

The other coworker was off work yesterday, but regardless, I wouldn't be able to ask to see it at work. It would be inappropriate. Plus she probably deleted them already.

Do you reuse your passwords? I certainly do. I have one that I only use for my bank account. Then I have another one that I only use for my email accounts (gmail, yahoo, etc.). Then I have one that I use for realjock and other forums and stuff like that, ones where it shouldn't be that bad if it gets hacked. If a forum where I have an account got hacked they could use that password on other forums.

And this has happened, but it was before I started using a separate password for my email accounts; I was using the same password for email accounts and forum accounts. One of the forums got compromised and then the hackers started sending out crap using my gmail account.

This is what I am doing precisely, after someone hacked one of my mail accounts. This is a reasonably good policy, I believe.

Now, whatever the fallout may be, I would never be 'extremely embarrassed'. Look, I am an adult, and yeah, I am watchin' porn. Sue me, if you don't like it... As simple as that.

polfsky if your company has an all staff email alias you could send an email to it saying that one of your accounts was hacked and someone was using it and sending porn. That should cover your rear.

I have memorized an alphanumeric sequence that has served me well for the past couple of years as a I bump up or down the digits or add punctuation. All of my passwords are different, which is annoying enough to keep the variances in a spreadsheet on my phone. But, never the base sequence.

I don't think the app was hacked. I do believe either something is eavesdropping on you or your password is too easy.
In any case, like the article says, if you didn't request a reset pin, delete that message.

It was my personal Google account (Google Voice) and whatsapp that were compromised. It was just these two friends who are my coworkers and we exchanged personal phone number/whatsapp etc so we can hang out, etc. So no need to mass-email my company. That would make the matter worse. icon_redface.gificon_redface.gif

I do come up with my own formula to make each password for each site unique as well. I use a combination of letters from each web site plus some digits of my phone number and some other stuff to generate each password. icon_neutral.gif

This is exactly what I have being doing for years! I have soooooo many different passwords, but can only remember the most important ones! the rest I have it written down somewhere. Websites such as Realjock is notorious for not being well monitored, and filled with hackers I am sure!

There is a very good app, available for MacOS X, iOS, Windows, Android, called "1Password". I have used it for years now. It will both generate, if one wishes, passwords of any number of sorts of varieties and automatically enter them into the program's database when one establishes new usernames and passwords for websites, plus several other features analogously needed for account numbers, serial numbers, etc.

This program resides on one's own computer and no place else. The information in the program's database (your passwords, etc.) are all encrypted. The owner establishes a very secure random easily remember but hard to guess master password for the 1Password program to access all the other passwords one needs. All one's passwords can thus be very abstruse and hard to guess passwords to thwart hackers, but the user only has to remember and keep safe his one master password to access the 1Password program. (I have a very hard to guess master password, which I generate from some mnemonics which are easy for me to remember but virtually impossible for a hacker to replicate into the actual password, short of sitting in a vehicle outside my building with a wireless keystroke duplicating device as I type my master password.)

There is quite a bit of information on the web about all the features of the program, which has been extensively reviewed by many of the computer magazines. It is a product of https://agilebits.com, and it can be googled for further information.
