... capped off with an evening parade, to avoid the daytime sun & heat in south Florida. My husband & I staffed a booth all day, 11 hours total including set up.

For those here who slam gay pride, I'll note that about 90% of those attending were dressed the same as if they were at the shopping mall. The others were guys going bare chested, a few others in leather shorts, and a number, like myself, in kilts. Not that a kilt is indecent, just something you don't see in malls.

The parade was also pretty tame. The usual assorted politicians, and enough fire trucks to fight a 6-alarm fire. Even the floats from the gay bars & clubs, including one known for its strippers, weren't scandalous, nothing worn more skimpy than a Speedo you'd see on the beaches here.

Everyone seemed to be having a good time. Even the local police and county deputies on duty, who were all smiles (for once). Maybe because the city Mayor and the County Sheriff were there and in the parade, along with several members of Congress.

But also because, as I've been told, a gay event is easy duty for them. Few if any fights & disturbances, mostly just a few people who get drunk and may become belligerent. But even those are few. I actually saw no police responses all day, never heard a siren.

And as always there was almost no trash & litter on the ground. Queens are so tidy! LOL! I know by dawn tomorrow you'd never guess there had ever been a major event in our city.

This is the way gay prides SHOULD be, but it's a few major cities that create a negative image, even within our own community. Yet today's was the kind of pride I've seen more often around the US than the more notorious variety. So here's to the good old-fashioned all-American community party & parade, reinterpreted with an LGBT theme. icon_biggrin.gif

I remember them, they were really large and inspiring, full of exciting energy. First I'd ever seen, back in the 1990s, made a big impression on me. They really did instill pride in me, just as I was coming out.

A lot of gays now think they no longer serve that purpose, but I believe there's still a part of the population that benefits from them. Hope you enjoy yours tomorrow! icon_biggrin.gif

Ours was torrential rains, non stop all day from about 3:00 AM last night until about 7:00 this evening. Yesterday was off and on rain, mostly on.

    http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2015/06/20/01-parade.html

"“This is a historic year for our LGBT community,” said Karla Rothan, executive director of Stonewall Columbus, which puts on the city’s Pride Festival. More than 400,000 people were expected to participate in this week’s events."

"Stonewall Executive Director Karla Rothan said the festival was closed early due to the bad weather. More than 1 1/2 inches of rain had fallen and it was showing no signs of letting up. Stonewall has a safety plan in place for the festival every year, but Rothan said this was the first time it was used to cancel the festival."

Denver pride is today and tomorrow ... Unfortunately I won't be able to make it this year icon_sad.gif

Oh well, I'm sure it'll be basically the same as the previous ones ... If I close my eyes, I can probably picture it in my mind

I didn't see any big names on the entertainment list so it hardly seems worth the drive up

The biggest PRIDE around my area is in St. Petersburg (FL, not Russia icon_eek.gif ), trying to see if I could go, but have no one else to go with, feels awkward walking around by myself. I was trying to see if I could volunteer just so I can find an excuse to go, now all I have to do is give a good excuse to get out of the house for a whole day or so.

OMG y'all had Pride today? icon_eek.gif

We have Pride next weekend (SF Pride). icon_biggrin.gif

But I have to fly some advertisement banner over the event instead of actually being there in person. icon_sad.gif

This was our first in years that wasn't under the threat of rain, simply that time of year down here. Typical is a sudden heavy thunderstorm with wind, that damages the vendor booth contents and causes everyone to seek shelter indoors. The connected outdoor booths are constructed in sections of metal framing, covered with heavy vinyl material - not a good place to be during an electrical storm.

But no rain this year, just strong sun, heat & humidity. Lots of people carrying umbrellas, making them technically parasols I suppose. I just wear a broad-brimmed hat, downturned to look somewhat Aussie Outback in appearance.

There was a banner plane near ours, made me think of you.

Prides can be held all month. A practical reason in a larger area like south Florida is to allow people to attend several on different weekends. Also from a commercial viewpoint lets the vendors and events companies work continuously all month.

From the viewpoint of the events organizers it means they aren't competing with each other for these rental resources, for entertainment, and of course for the same attendees. Nor competing for prominent national politicians to attend, and keeps Pride in the public's eye for more than a single day. It's the best solution, even if it means not adhering strictly to the traditional Stonewall Anniversary dates at the end of June.

FOLLOW UP: I did drive down our main street (Wilton Drive) this Sunday morning, the day after pride. And as I predicted in my OP, the street, sidewalks and side streets were immaculate. Difficult to believe a major event ended there less than 12 hours earlier.

And pics are starting to appear online, including through our local Sun-Sentinel newspaper. And as usual, the photographers always manage to focus on the stray oddball characters most of the rest of us never saw there. Stupid, but not pornographic. Though I do wish someone would take the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence Idiocy away and burn the lot of them at the stake. icon_mad.gif

But I will admit I saw a couple of guys, inside 2 different gay clubs, who also were a bit much. Fortunately they apparently confined their antics to the clubs, not exposing children to it on the street. And we did have a lot of children attending, as usual. I believe the police were instructed to suppress displays inappropriate for minors.

One guy wore a Borat-style swimsuit, except made out of colorful ribbons. His saving grace was having a very lovely smooth young ass. The other guy wore a classic athletic jock, along with a leather chest harness. An older and more hairy ass, but still commendable, with a more impressive bulge. Still, I'm glad none of that appeared on the street, as far as I know, and certainly not in the parade.

Finally got a chance to go to St. Pete Pride again this year, went with a friend, it was really fun. I wish I had been there the day before for the parade, I only went to the Festival this year, actually had never been to a Parade. But I took a picture with this extremely hot smoking go-go boy, who grabbed my crotch when we took the picture icon_redface.gif He asked me if it was too much, and I told him I liked it icon_redface.gif
