There are so many words that could be used to describe it; hate, evil, ignorance, bigotry, mental unbalance; but, I actually cannot explain it because my head cannot wrap itself around such evil, just like I cannot explain the evil of blindly following some insane belief created by a mortal man and beheading people or throwing them head first off buildings. There is only one word that can describe this sort of violence occurring in the world. That word is 'evil'.

There's no explanation, other than the guy was crazy.

I think from his birth he was raised in an atmosphere of fear, denigration, and hatred of African-Americans; born of racism, and the unresolved cultural trauma of defeat in the Civil War in many parts of the American South.

Theodor Adorno, the German sociologist, once asked, with genuine passion: "Poetry? How can one write POETRY after AUSCHWITZ!"

To which one of our greatest poets (the late Mark Strand) replied: "How can one EAT LUNCH after Auschwitz?"

    We....don't......care.

We don't care and we won't be honest.
When a tragedy like this happens we go through mental gymnastics to say it is an isolated incident, it is not really racially motivated, WE aren't like that crazy guy who did this.
The reality is we are all capable of evil. These are not isolated incidents. Racism is systemic and we are all culpable for the system we have inherited. We can do better.

Inheritances can be squandered, lost, given up... or maintained.

Would that it were the former, in this case.

Amoral and unmoored kids due to being raised by wolves - thus lacking in any human empathy or compassion.

All of the chatter about gun control would be unnecessary is the above did not occur.

A certain 1930s German chancellor read all sorts of BS that was published in the early 1900s too and reached some of the same conclusions. Unfortunately he became a dictator.

Very likely, especially if there were conflicted feelings about the father, or if the father was pretty much out of the picture. The individual who committed this crime has been isolated from other people for some time, only has contact with the real world through certain websites (which is to say, has little contact with reality), and probably cannot make direct eye contact with other people (note the police pics.)

WE ARE ALL SOMEWHAT PRODUCTS OF OUR ENVIRONMENT,EVERYONE CERTAINLY SHOULDN'T BE PARENTS. MAYBE PARENTS SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR CRIMES OF THEIR CHILDREN?

icon_rolleyes.gif Perhaps you could cite some recent examples - say within the lifetime of the killer - of the "Right Wing hate speech" you decry. And no, I don't mean any from the appropriately misnamed "Killer Mike."

Me, I see it as the criminal act of a sociopath, which should be punished swiftly by a death sentence. My takeaway from it is the unconditional - and humbling - forgiveness shown by the members of that church, which is about as good an example of actually following Christ's admonitions as will be found today.

I read a powerful book awhile back called "A Course in Miracles" and it defines evil as being insane.

I have to agree, because what sane person would commit genocide or open fire on people in a church?

If he had been Muslim Fox would have called it for what it was. A terrorist attack. Not the work of a lone crazed killer. But, he's white and Christian so can't be that.

As for recent examples of right wing hate speech, turn on Rush Limbaugh, Fox, Neil Bortz, etc any day of the week. Plenty to listen to. And that's not including the daily rants on the net from various other groups that the republican party sees no problem accepting donations from.

Well, since you listen to Fox News and Conservative talk shows, like Rush Limbaugh, I really wonder that you need to ask for examples.

Those with advantages are mostly blind to it. Those who see it are the disadvantaged who have to power to affect change.

Once again, as always, long of cliches and short - in this case, absent - on facts. Stuff a sock in it, why don't you?

A black man threatens whites and it's labeled terrorism. But not when a white man kills blacks
