I don't understand what extra-virgin olive oil is. I know what virgin wool is although I don't understand why anyone would care about a sheep's behavior.

It has nothing to do with the sheep's behavior...it's the shepherd's behavior. Do you really want to wear a cotton shirt with shepherd cum stains on it? icon_eek.gif

I've lost count of the number of 'food shock - prices to rocket' scare stories I've read in the last few years: coffee, bananas, olive oil. Guess what? The prices didn't 'rocket' and I'm still buying all of them.

Fortunately the trees in Lugano will supply their usual crop this year. One cannot cook without olive oil after all.

    World's kitchens? No.

Kitchens in countries where olive oil is a staple cooking aid and ingredient? (Italy, Greece, Spain) Yes.

For the rest of the world, who only uses olive oil once in a while as a Mediterranean-inspired salad dressing, you'll be fine. As MuchMore said, 16 ounces lasts him six months, and he loves the stuff. A family in Italy, Greece, or Spain will go through that in a week.

Thanks for the info, I just shared this with my Italian husband. Naturally he practically bathes in olive oil, as did my prior late Italian husband. Definitely be a shock in OUR kitchen if the prices jump. They both taught me the superior cooking & health value of olive oil. My northern European family always used older US-style vegetable oils and Crisco, pure artery cloggers.

So we just now did an inventory of his oil stockpile, much of it gourmet flavored oils he doesn't use daily. Tomorrow he'll hit the supermarket and check the prices, start stocking up with gallon containers. Just the plain varieties (and light) he uses for his ordinary cooking. He goes through quite a lot of it, and unopened olive oil keeps fairly well.

He always gets Italian brands, although actually the oil inside is often from Spain. I'll have him check for any domestic product, as was suggested above. Buy a smaller bottle if the price is good, see if he finds it acceptable.

Art_Deco. You are NOT married to your partner, despite having had the opportunity to do so for quite some time. Therefore, he is NOT your "husband."

He's whatever I choose to call him. Whereas you have no right to stick your nose in our business.

You are making a claim that your partner is legally married to you. That is a false claim. You are LYING when you post here that he is your "husband."

Maybe he's drunk on all that olive oil he has in storage!
