The different reactions underscore the tough challenge facing Republican candidates in a deep field; namely, how to appeal to a conservative base that strongly opposes same-sex marriage without alienating a general-election audience that largely supports it.

If the GOP is truly serious about winning any major elections over the next few years, it is going to have to stop pandering to all the narrow minded bible thumping screwballs and other reactionary rejects. Republicans definitely need to broaden their base by becoming more inclusive. It is that plain, pure, and simple. Otherwise the GOP is going to decline and even dissolve into an undesirable fringe organization.

The GOP is already an undesirable fringe organization, except on the local level where Republicans are forced to behave like rational progressive adults due to this thing called reality.

The minute a Republican goes national, their bigoted bona fides rise to the surface. Republican Presidential candidates are all either greedy, selfish Ayn Rand libertarian reactionaries or fake Christian nutjobs -- why would they act like what they are not. They are proudly regressive and proudly anti-gay -- they will never evolve or change.
