Very good article; thanks for posting it. It has salient tips and protocols for how to handle the inevitable situations which arise.
A couple years ago I ran into a good acquaintance and former long-time neighbor I'd known since I was 16 at a public social event. I didn't recognize her when she came up and effusively greeted me, as the last time I had seen her some ten years or so earlier, SHE indeed had been a HE. The meeting was actually hilarious and could have been a situation comedy sketch. Fortunately, I didn't make any faux pas, but quite interestingly, when she revealed whom she was/had been, she immediately provided all the social information quite succinctly about which anyone would naturally wonder, thus giving me (and a couple other friends also present) enough time to absorb the revelation and to formulate our next sensible comment. I was really on the hot seat, as she had deliberately approached us to greet me rather than her other acquaintance in our group. Of note, she made a better looking woman than she had a man, although she had looked just fine as a man, too.
