UndercoverMan saidWith all of our societal ills we waste out precious time on things like this. Exactly which of the commandments, if kept, would add to our social ills or make the world a worse place in which to live? It's people not keeping those commandments or those of their particular religion that makes the world a living Hell.
The first four commandments, actually, are a waste of what could have been valuable law: You shall have no other gods, Remember the Sabbath, No graven images, No blasphemy. It's, uh, hardly godly for a being to give a shit about such things. Really, jealousy? From a supreme being?
Honoring your parents? If they're great people--even moderately OK people--I can see that. But if they're a bunch of incestuous alcoholic kitten killers, fuck that. Stupid law.
Not bearing false witness? Great. Not killing? Great (unless you're the Christian hypocrite who believes in stoning people for violating these commandments). Not stealing? Great. Not coveting your neighbor's shit...really? That made the list? What horseshit!
How about: don't rape. Don't buy all the land around your neighbor so that you can force him out of his house. Stop killing kittens. Maiming is actually bad...even if nobody actually dies of it. Polluting? Voting Republican? I mean, if these commandments were directed by a god, I suggest that god get a better lawyer.
They should remove this monument because it's actually a step backward from actual first-world law.
